I live in Essex and currently go to Kingston university. It takes me about 2 hours to get to uni. I was also considering Hertfordshire (2.45 mins) and Brighton ( 2.30 mins) and would have gone there if I hadn't got offers from unis closer to me.

I've also studied at the University of York, but moved up to York because it was too far away to commute.

My firm choice is in Brunel. I live in Kent and it is about a 2 hour journey to there. Costing me about £20. I will try and visit home every term. But doubt I will actually be able to sometimes. I am also considering Cantebury Christchurch which is about 3 hours away.

I live in Devon, and I'm looking at Essex in Colchester for 2013, depending on conditions I'm looking at between a 4 to 6 hour journey one way. But I'm also considering Lancaster, Keele, Oxford Brookes and Kent.

Like you I'll be applying for 2013 entry, I've already looked around durham (google map it!) and I'm considering St.Andrews (Scotland) - these are of course the furthest away considering I live in London!

    Hey there!

I'm from Bournemouth and I go to university in Aberystwyth, on the west coast of Wales. In a car that's 200 miles and 4 and a half hours (via Bristol & Cardiff). On a train its 310 miles and 7 and a half hours with a train change at Birmingham. There is only one trainline to and from Aber, so I get the CrossCountry train from Bournemouth to Birmingham International (via Southampton and Reading) which is 3 hours, then a 40 minute wait then a 3 and a half hour Arriva trains Wales train from Birmingham International to Aberystwyth (via Birmingham New Street, Telford, Shrewsbury & Caersws)

I only use this service termly really as Arriva trains Wales runs once every 2 hours and it's only 2 carriages. The price isn't too bad, about £48 return on a railcard. The CrossCountry is hourly.

I live in Lancashire and go to uni in Norwich. My hometown is quite difficult to get to as there's only one train a hour into it. It takes 2 hours on bus or train to get to Manchester or a 40 minute bus ride then a train to get to Leeds which are the two nearest transport hubs.
Takes me 6 and half hours to get home the quickest. I usually book train tickets in advance as it costs around 25-30 instead of over 80 for an off-peak return.
I orginally wanted to go to Chester as it was close but not close enough for my parents to expect me to go home regulary but then turned out the course wasn't right for me.
I had the choice between Kingston and Norwich. My mum didn't want me to go to Kingston but if I had of got in I would be there instead of Norwich. Weather she liked it or not.

You've just got to weigh up if the courses at the nearest unis are right for you and if they're not, its not right your parent should interfere with your right to a better suited course.

I'm in Northern Ireland and travelling to mainland UK.
First choice is 343 miles away, according to google maps, and insurance is 175.

I live in North London and currently study at Leeds University. Last time I checked, that's about 190 miles door-to-door so it's really not as bad as what some of you on this forum are doing. However, I would have liked to be a little closer to home (i.e. further south, say Birmingham or Leicester) so I could travel back more regularly but the journey from London to Leeds is amazing. It takes just 2 hours and 15 minutes on the train, meaning I can still go home pretty regularly.

Also, I love the location of Leeds and the fact that I am able to travel frequently to other cities in the North Zone. The amazing Manchester is just 1 hour away on the train while Bradford is 20 minutes, Sheffield is 30-40 minutes and York also 30-40 minutes. The way I see it, I reckon I've got a pretty great arrangement!

How are you international students finding it? Hope you're settling ok into a new university, city and academic year!

Just back from dropping eldest son at Warwick. 635 miles driving round trip plus a 2 hour ferry each way, all in 41 hours. Knackered!! Think next time he can fly and have his stuff shipped. Would probably be cheaper as well!

I've been looking at places to do an MA already I'm quite prepared to move to the states for that! At the moment I'm 300 miles from home - 7 hours by train or 3/4 hour flying.
