I'm a new member, though I have followed the 2012 applicants thread, so feel as though I know a lot of you already. I'm going to be re-applying, applied last year to Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester & Birmingham, was rejected from Liverpool and Birmingham after interview and the other two pre-interview.
I've just had some feedback from Liverpool, who basically said not to bother re-applying, as they don't consider people who they have previously rejected (i'm assuming after interview, but maybe not?). Does anyone know if this is the case for other universities?

same position as you. two pre-int rejections and two post-int. i know Bham have also said they usually dont accept reapplicants if they rejected them after interview, so id reccommend not applying to Lpool or Bham. Leeds and manc you should be fine with

One thing i would add to that. Manchester don't accept applicants who applied to them in the previous year and did not reach the interview stage. At least, that was the case for 2012.

If people on here want my advice. For what it's worth. I would reapply to 4 different universities. This year i kept two the same and chose two new ones. It may very well be a matter of coincidence. But, the two new ones gave me offers. Wheras the other two that i had applied to the previous year. Gave me straight out rejections. Just something to consider.

Woah where do u know this from? Is this the case? I thought they said they will consider applications from people that have applied twice (i.e. 2 years in a row) and then look at both of the applications as a whole so look at your personal statement from last year and this year.. You sure they just give u an automatic rejection if u didnt get an IV last year?!

I've just checked, it appears that they've changed their policy this year. In which case there isn't any problem with re-applying. Like you said, they just compare the two applications and how they differ. I remember that was the policy this year because i was going to reapply there but realised i couldn't.

RIght so most people must be close to finishing their exams by now, whats everyone hoping to get?
I was aiming for A*AA but after OCR Core 4 today, I'll be ecstatic with AAA! From previous interview experience though, most reapplicants tended to have at least A*AA to get an interview, how likely do you think that'll be true this year?
Good luck with any exams y'all still have and Congrats to those who've finished! Can't wait till the summer!

Tell us a bit about your:
    - work experience (type and duration)
    - voluntary work
    - EC activities

I personally don't think you should have applied to King's College London and Sheffield with a UKCAT average of 625, going by previous threads, it does seem a bit low. At the Open Day the admissions tutor said they don't have a cut off but generally look at scores in the top 50th percentile of the national average, which this year was around 635. Sheffield normally have a cut off around 640-650.

Leeds will have liked long-term work experience and voluntary work, which is why I asked you to provide us with some more information.

Hello, i have applied for dentistry but received 4 rejections, and i am in a very similar case to you, i was wondering if you could help me, in terms of dentistry what did you do in your gap year to increase your chances of getting into university (for example is it better to attempt to volunteer in many dental clinics, or work in a smaller number but for longer periods of time or any particular courses), plus i was also wondering if there is a way to improve your UKCAT score, i scored 625 last time which is kinda average, and sorry i know its alot one more thing, how did you change your personal statement to increase your chances of entering into university.

Thank you for reading this, yours sincerely

thank you for replying so fast, i worked for a total of 3 weeks in my uncles Dental clinic in madrid (shadowing the dentist and assisting in orperations) and in a chiropractic clinic for a week, i currently work in new look, and i was part of the basketball team for the college which i went to aswell as the secondary school beforehand. (i sometimes draw but not as much as before (advantage of manual dexterity) but would it be valid to say in a personal statement to say that i draw in my spare time, or even in an interview, ive never even had an interview before, yeahhh i took the UKCAT last year after the deadline for dentistry and medicine for UCAS, and Sheffield i think its a different dental course isnt it?

No, Sheffield doesn't have a different dentistry course? It's good that you have 3 weeks work experience in Madrid, but I would strongly advise you to get at least 2 weeks work experience in a NHS general surgery. You'll most likely be working in the NHS post-graduation and during your 5 years at dental school, they want to know you know what a career as a dentist is all about and what types of problems the NHS is currently facing (reforms, lack of dental access etc). It's also good to have other types of work experience (which Leeds LOVE) e.g. oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental laboratory, community dentistry, dental hospital, orthodontics, private dentistry etc (and yes many people will have at least 2-3 of these ''specialties'' which basically makes your application look less impressive). So you need to make sure you stand out in comparison to all the other impressive UCAS applications.

You could say you draw in your free time, but I don't think most of the universities are that fussed about you demonstrating your manual dexterity (as they can teach you that at dental school). The only one I've come across who want it written in the PS is Leeds (again, they are very picky with the non-academic factors because they are very popular due to the low GCSE requirements and no UKCAT requirement).

Do you have any voluntary work in a caring environment? Most, if not all, will want to see some example of this.

What you need to do now is get some NHS general work experience and organise some voluntary work in a caring environment e.g. nursing home, hospice, disable charity etc.

You might not be able to see this but you have no idea how much your helping me out here, i appreciate it, mann i was soo clueless,

so i definately have to get some work experience under the NHS for certain. Yes i swear your actually right, Leeds are soo PICKY, but i guess they have to be, i have had some work experience in a pharmacy within a health clinic in year 10 for 2 weeks work expirience but my form tutor told me it wasnt worth mentioning since it was soo long ago. i do not have any other experience in a caring environment, i was wondering if there were any volunteering courses to do to work in a caring environment, such as there used to be a scheme for medical and dental care for the homeless around christmas, but its not around anymore.

Would work at a Dental clinic count as work experience in a caring environment, im not trying to sound blank but i think its less directional care than working in a care home for example.

Once again thank you for your fast reply

Who's considering studying dentistry abroad? Because if I don't get in this time I'm going Spain and doing the 5 year course there which the GDC allows in UK

Hello, I was wanting some advise. I applied for dentistry and got to the interview stages and then got all rejections. I really really want to study dentistry but I don't know If it's worth trying again just to get rejections again. I feel I am not confident enough. I am really upset about being too quiet and would like to improve upon this but how? Any help will be appreciated.  I just couldn't think of anything to say...
