Theology Applicants for 2013 entry

Out of interest, have you been to open days for any of these?

I've been to Manchester and I'm off to King's on Wednesday
I've also got Nottingham coming up in the next couple of weeks - I haven't been to Birmingham or Exeter - Bham because I've only recently been looking at it and Exeter because it's so far from where I live!

I've read some stuff for my EPQ, but mainly just little bits - I have 'Jerusalem: The Biography' sitting next to me right now but it's about 700 pages long or something and I'm lacking the willpower to pick it up and read it!!

I recommend 'A History of Christianity' by Diarmaid MacCulloch, it has some really interesting stuff in it and it's great for just picking up and reading certain parts (although it's very in depth at times and a lot of the names/terminology in it I've never heard of). Oh, and it's only £9 or something on amazon

Out of those, I've been to Nottingham, Birmingham and Manchester and I'll be going to Exeter on the 8th. In my experience, I didn't like kings because it turns out I prefer campus unis, so I guess that's down to personal preference. I didn't like Bham either because I thought the course was too dull and shallow; the lecturer who did the introductory talk was really creepy and specialised in 'religion and healthcare' and I was thinking, Why? Nottingham was awesome though; such a nice place, friendly and the department is awesome!

I know the feeling

Thanks, I'll look into it

Nottingham does look really good, I can't wait to go and visit
Please tell us how Exeter was!

What kind of wider reading have you all done? I'm 75% sure that I'm going to abandon applying for history in favour of theology and I'm afraid that I've run out of time to catch up on any reading for my personal statement :s-smilie:

in case anyone is interested...
My name is Milli and I'm about to go into year 13 - I did English lit, history, religious studies (philosophy + ethics) and economics (which I'm dropping) at AS. I want to apply to:
King's
Nottingham
Exeter
Birmingham
Manchester
I really want to study in London (my choices for history included KCL, UCL and QMCL) so King's would be my first choice

In terms of the 'extra stuff' that I do, I'm currently doing a YASS course in Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis, an EPQ on the link between Christianity and social control (reignited an obsession with religious cults) and I'm a 'buddy' to a Year 8 class.

I can't really explain why I want to do theology, perhaps because everyone that's posted before me has said it so well
I think the fact that religion has had such a massive impact on events throughout history is probably partly why I find it so interesting; the fact that even today in modern Western society, religion manages to influence social issues and current affairs even after all these years. For example, the recent conflict between the Church of England and the government over gay marriage was a major news story and it is almost like religion is perhaps the only thing that still manages to retain its influence and dominance even though religious attitudes have changed so much. I think we need to understand different religions in order to be successful in not only relations with other people on a personal level, but in international relations and political issues on a wider scale as well. Plus it's absolutely fascinating.

Ahhhhh, religion :^_^:

aaah youre so similar to me!
I'm taking the same 3 subjects to A-level except i took German where you took economics...i'm also looking at Birmingham, Manchester and Exeter! Apparently the Kings course is really good (my teacher did her degree there) but as i live just outside of London im not looking there. However, if you do like ethics courses as well as philosophy/theology then i suggest you look at Leeds (if you havent already) because i thought the course there was really good! It was easily my favourite... although im going to look at Birmingham on saturday so i guess i can compare then!
Also, my EPQ is theology-related, im looking into the reasons that traditional Christianity is declining in society and factors around this.

Exeter was AWESOME which is really annoying because it is equally as good as Nottingham, so my whole order is in flux! :s-smilie: I might have to still go for nottingham because they do Islam whereas Exeter don't at all and Islam is a topic I am quite into... Plus nottingham have a bigger department...

Unfortunately, I've been put off ethics for life thanks to my RS a-level, every lesson makes me suicidal
Your EPQ sounds really interesting, good luck with that!

Exeter looks incredible, I'm definitely applying there (their year abroad option is extremely appealing!!)

Yea, it was mostly great, but they don't have Islam! Why why why? They must be the only department to leave out completely one of the largest and most influential religions on the planet! :s-smilie:

Out of interest, is anyone going to the Durham open day on the 22nd? I left it too late to go sooner so I'm off next week

Also, if anyone wants MORE reading, Karen Armstrong is good. She's written loads of books about the Bible and God; there's even a few on Islam. She also wrote a two part memoir (she was a nun for a while). The books are called Ash-Wednesday and The Spiral Staircase. They're sometimes a nice break from the heavier stuff but, as I keep telling my teacher, are still kind of RS-ish.

Are you going on the theology talk? I'm on the one from 1:30-2:30. Maybe we'll all see each other there

Hi I'm Jess, year 13, looking at applying for single honours theology 2013 entry.

I'm going for; Oxford, Durham, Nottingham, Manchester and Sheffield but I didn't get to go to the Nottingham open day unfortunately. Does anyone have some wise insight to share?
Hiya all...its been a while! Had a carzy busy (but very fun) summer and now trying to get back into the idea of working (which is actually a lot harder now I'm not in school.)

I got AAA for my A2 levels, slightly disappointed (was 2 UMS off and A* in RS!) but I know I didn't work anywhere near as hard as I could have done so its all my own fault really. I sent off my UCAS form today which was slightly terrifying! I've been working really hard on my personal statement and I'm actually pretty pleased with it...just got to have my fingers crossed that its enough! I'm applying to Oxford (LMH), Durham, St Andrews, Edinburgh and Exeter.... I know its a bit of a risk applying to Oxford but I have met the offer requirement - just got to hope the rest of the applications good enough to get me an interview!

I'll also be at Durham next week...not sure what time I'm going to the theology talk though. Although I've been before and really love the place, I'll be a bit embarrassed if I end up at Durham - both of my parents studied theology there!

Did anyone go to the Exeter open day by any chance? I've been to the campus and the city for a brief visit but it wasn't on the open day and I really like the look of the course so I just decided to apply but it would be nice to hear some insights if anyone has any?

Nottingham was great; great course, great campus, great staff  It was 'that than which nothing greater can be conceived' Anselm joke! :awesome:

I went to Exeter, the department seems really nice, and the campus is really good too... and MASSIVE!
help please~

I got AAB at AS in bio, chem and math respectively

would my choice in a levels discredit a hypothetical application for theology?

Certainly not, provided you can show you are interested in the subject. I know of people who've done theology at Cambridge having never taken the subject before
