What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
Discussion for A-Level students and for those choosing their A-Level subjects.

Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?Pretty much this. I need AAB on my final results to get into my chosen university, though. I'm on target for D*AB though, so in theory I should be ok.(Original post by emmakh123)
A*A*A* - shocked
A*A*A - ecstatic
A*AA - very happy (grades i need for firm)
AAA - pleased
AAB - happy
ABB - satisfied (insurance offer) - anything less ill be annoyed with
(D* = Distinction Star) -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
Like others have said, I think it's all subjective. Personally im realistic, I know that im not a straight A* student but that doesn't signify a lack of dedication on my part. I underestimated the step up from GCSE to AS and it took me a year to adjust. By this time I was relieved just to get 4 C's as I found the transition extremely difficult.
Nevertheless, I've excelled greatly at A2 so much that my BBB target is looking increasingly obtainable alongside my preferred uni placement. Following mostly poor results throughout AS, I somehow pulled off A's on the English re-sit (my first attempt was an E
) and the A2 History Coursework (pending external examination). I also got B's in Sports and on the more recent English Lit exam - some achievement considering the struggles I encountered for most of last year. I couldn't have imagined getting anywhere close to the results i'm currently forecasted so it's been quite a turnaround.
This said, BBB for others would be a disaster, understandable because everyone has individual targets and goals to achieve. There's no point measuring yourself against others because If I had done similar during AS I would have probably given up. -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
I got ABBa, which is what I needed. Anything less would have been disappointing. They're not brilliant grades, though I did have to claw my way up from ACC(A) at AS. Also they seemed better back in the days when you couldn't get better than an A, haha.

Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
I'd be upset with anything below 3 A's...considering I can basically fail my summer exams and still get A's in two of my A levels.
I think good grades definitely differs between the individual. If an individual decided he/she didn't want to go to university and achieved BBB I would say they are good grades but a medicine applicant with the same grades would be embarrassed. -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
It depends what you want to do with your future... for university, I really need 3 B's but because one of my subjects isnt going very well I often wonder if I will, I'm particularly hard on myself and so if I got less than a B i'd be upset even though it's probably likely to happen
I know quite a lot of people who feel disappointed with B's which really pisses me off, but would you really want to be like those people anyway? no so it doesnt matter their just rude dicks if they make a big song and dance about it -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?I don't understand how you can say 'it depends on what you want to do with your future' and then have a second line that completely contradicts your first one. What if what one wants to do with their future (i.e. university) requires AAA or A*AA or A*A*A ...? Surely they should be disappointed in any Bs at all (me being one of these people - if I got anything less than an A in Further Maths and Physics I'm probably not getting into uni this year - at least via the official, non-clearing route). What if someone needs CCC and thinks 'I know people who feel disappointed with Cs which really pisses me off' - but surely you'd be one of those people?(Original post by Heidi_27)

Such double standards.Last edited by Intriguing Alias; 09-05-2012 at 09:35. -

A lot of people want to go to university, I want to go to university, I'd imagine everyone who wants to go to uni would love AAA or A*A*A* but its not always realistic, there are alot of universitys these days which take Bs and Cs and so if thats the grade you get, whether disapointing or not, if thats what you've got then when applying people should be more realistic and have a safer insurance choice -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades? You're massively missing the point.(Original post by Heidi_27)

What's this got to do with whether you can still get into other unis? Why say something ridiculous like 'whether disappointing or not' as if the disappointment doesn't matter - that's the whole point of this thread for crying out loud!
And what if it is realistic? Would you be disappointed if you got DDD? You can still get into university with that so maybe instead of being disappointed you should've had a safer insurance choice.
My lowest offer is A*AA because I'm pretty confident I'll get that or better. Now I've got an A* but if I get AB I will be massively disappointed (and extremely upset too) and I don't see why you have a problem with that? I would have to completely change my expectations and choose to apply to different universities than I originally wanted to so surely you can see how that's disappointing!? -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
After being told explicitly by my sociology teachers I would get an A in my first module and trying really hard with revision and in the exam I was gutted to get a B but a 'friend' I had at the time told me to stop being spoilt as people have achieved worse.
You shape your opinions and ambitions based on what you are likely to achieve therefore if two people get CCC, one was predicted that and the other predicted BBB then the person who did not achieve their predicted grades is entitled to be upset even if the other is happy. -
Re: What would you consider disappointing A-level grades?
This argument is rubbish because you should be happy for the grades you 'need'.
For example to get to University I NEED AAA and If I don't get AAA and got AAB I owould be mortified but a friend whom 'needed' AAB would obviously be delighted.
So no matter what It would mean to other people your results only matter to YOU and therefore they shouldn't be compared like this
