Just had my first lesson came to lights and I shifted down the gears as I approached and came to a halt and hand break up. Instructor thought I'd had lessons b4 lol 😁 then when amber came hand break of and away I went, instructors words were

Wow. Maybe you're a natural born pro...
It really depends on the car.

For instance, in my instructor's car I go down to first gear at the end of the road, whereas in my Mum's car if I did that I'd stall, so I stay in second.

If I'm slowing down to stop, I'll usually go down into two (in case I need to keep moving) and then I'll go into one if I've complely stopped.

You really only want to use one if you're starting from a complete standstill, although like I say it depends on the car.
Woah old thread is old.

I'm still using the same method.

Brake until nearly at a standstill, clutch down, put into first. Wait until lights are green.

You'll put some extra wear on the throw out bearing that way but hey, it'll still probably outlast the clutch.
