Are "long" quotes included in the word count?
I have a quote of 80 words I want to put into a 1500 word essay except I don't have 80 words to spare!

I remember someone telling me ages ago that if a quote is long enough, it isn't included in the word count but I can't remember what that number was/if that's even right.

    Anyone know?!

Not for me. Anything outside of the appended figures, reference list, header/footer and page numbers is included in the word count.

You should consult your tutor to see if you have a different policy.

Everything bar the Bibliography is included in word count for me, and that includes footnotes etc.

All quotes are included in my word counts and we are encouraged to use them sparingly and attempt to paraphrase them.

It will depend on the rules of your particular course. You will also have rules peculiar to your course on what the penalties are for overrunning. Usually there will be some leeway. You have to ask your tutors or look at the documentation for your course.

AND footnotes  to be honest noone on my course really knows what the rules are but none of us include footnotes in the wordcount and they've never mentioned it/said we've gone over soo I think we'll just continue not to ask lol!

I've just ditched the quote to be on the safe side!

I was going to see if I could find the history submission guidelines on the website.

I'm sure you've probably already received an answer to your question by now, and it might be too late for you to see this, but I'm in my final year doing a History degree and our guidelines have always been that everything apart from the bibliography is included in the word count. I'd assume this is standard practice across all history degrees. Our university didn't really explain this to us either, it's taken me up until now to finally understand properly what they expect from us in essay writing! But on our online workspace there is a history style guide which explains how to set out your essay, how to reference, what is included in the word count, etc. You might want to see if your uni has one because if you don't follow the practices properly they do dock you marks for it

Hope this might have helped you a bit!
