Re: Are communist countries allowed to join the European Union?Seconded. Overall requirement to join the EU is for a nation to have a functioning market economy and a democratic society. A communist country would usually not meet either. And come to think of it, neither would a laissez-faire nation on the economic side of things.(Original post by VeniViciVidi)
This is incorrect. -
Re: Are communist countries allowed to join the European Union?Yeh. You are correct. It was a stupid thing to say.(Original post by VeniViciVidi)

theres only 4 communist countries today. China, North Korea, Cuba and Laos -
Re: Are communist countries allowed to join the European Union?Belarus does not even pretend to be a communist country. It is simply a dictatorship. It is debatable enough if any of the mentioned countries actually are communist, considering China's embrace of Capitalism and North Korea's embrace of Monarchy. Belarus is clearly the product of the Authoritarian Communism that the USSR developed, yet Belarus took a step too far with the Authoritarian part to leave much room for the Communism. Indeed one can see numerous aspects that show this: while Communism clearly dictates for a single party state, not only did Lukashenko undermine the Communist Party's influence in Belarus but he formed his own leading block. Furthermore Belarus clearly strives for a Mixed Economy leaning towards state control - market socialism in other words, not at all aiming for a Communist style economy and completely rejecting what was coined, especially considering early 90s Russia, Wild Capitalism.(Original post by Infallible)
Belarus?
Case in point is that a Communist government would die when the party dies. For Belarus, the government would die if Lukashenko dies. Clear case of a Dictatorship, not a Communist country.Last edited by Brandmon; 30-03-2012 at 14:26. -

None of those countries have been communist since the fall of the Soviet Union. -
Re: Are communist countries allowed to join the European Union?
The adoption of free-market policies is a prerequisite for joining the European Union. So 'true' communist countries (although of course every communist will tell you that 'true' communism hasn't been implemented so that they can cover up the failures of their economic/political system of choice) can not join the EU.
