I don't think that's necessarily true. I rarely conform to the norm (I wouldn't bother posting if I didn't strongly disagree with something someone had said), I'm frequently argumentative, and I'm often accused of being arrogant, abrasive and insulting by those I disagree with. Yet I have lots of green rep.
It's true in a lot of cases I think, although admittedly not all.

Anyway, I'm going to be on my best behaviour now in case I upset another moderator with my sarcastic sense of humour. I do want supper before I go to bed tonight, and I definately don't want them to get out the belt.

Don't think this is true because more often than not the reputation system is used when people disagree. This means that those who don't conform to the norm are likely to have negative ratings - despite being perfectly nice people and very popular. I think a lot of people on this forum take themselves (and the forum) far too seriously (including the moderation team). Most seem to lack a sense of humour on here to be honest.
Well...exactly? Believe it or not, you tend not to be friends with people you disagree with all the time. Interactions on TSR are fleeting so the judgements are snap - if you disagree with me, I'm (obviously) less likely to feel favourable.

Whatever happened to a bit of banter and a sarcastic debate? =]
I don't recall ever having sarcastic debates with complete strangers in real life (and if I did they might reasonably begin to dislike me)...so why would I do it online?

It doesn't help that text is a completely useless method of communication, so a tongue in cheek jab can be taken as a direct personal attack. This is a fundamental issue though, not TSR specific.

I think one problem with the rep system is that helpful insightful posts which take people a long time to write and are genuinely useful to whoever is asking the question generally receive very little rep. This is especially the case if - as often happens - the OP registers to post a single thread and thus has minimal rep to hand out to thank people who help them.

I'm not sure there's any real way to solve this but just my two cents.

There isn't. Helping someone has to be done for the sake of helping them really and there is nothing wrong with that. If you continue to make helpful and informative posts you will end up with a high rep eventually because most people will reward you and other people will also rep posts that answer something well which saves them having to - I know I used to.

As for the debate I will give my normal reply to these threads:

    1) I couldn't care less if rep exists or not. Unless you make sparkly or pink gems, in which case I do.
    2) Bring back disco/yellow gems (or at least something pretty).
    3) Bring back the black gem for people who hide their rep.
    4) Tories :facepalm2:
    5) Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I don't think this is actually true, even if it sometimes feels like it. I haven't seen any statistics for a year or so, but it's something in the region of 2 pos reps given to every 1 neg as an average for the site.

    2) I agree
    3) I agree
    4) I think we can both agree that private schools are awesome
    5)

Rep power was the main difference. Right now the highest rep power you can have is +12 (and the highest anyone has actually reached is +9), which is a pretty small amount and not enough to take people up or down more than one gem / rep power level in one go. On the old system, rep power was basically unlimited and was also affected by postcount and days since joining TSR. The highest repped people could take people up or down several gems in one go. You could go from +6 to about -3 gems in one hit if you got negged by someone with a really high rep power, as it was so large compared to total rep points most people had.

Also you could have more gems. At the most you could have 21 green (or yellow, or flashing when it got really high) gems, whereas now the highest anyone has is 9, and you could only rep one person per day.

There were also comments. I went to the rep images thread on TSR to dig out some old pics if you're interested.

Aye, having the gems change colour at 3 or 4 gems would be nice, add a bit more colour. I assume when someone gets 11 gems we will see the return of yellow gems.

EierVonSatan posted some colours a while back which go with this new design. They looked nice. Not sure what was decided on it.
