    Computer Science or Software Engineering
I have read that Computer Science involves too much Maths and low-level science about computers or that Software Engineering concentrates only on programming. I personally like Maths and making algorithms as well as programming (actually I want to work as a programmer) but I prefer not concentrating on only one of these things. Which degree program do you think is better (in terms of practical application and versatility)?
P.S. I am going to study in the University of Edinburgh or University of Glasgow so opinions from students from these universities will be highly appreciated. I would be glad to understand what are the pros and cons of these degrees.
Thank you in advance for the answers!

Most CS and SE courses are basically the same with a few modules different. At Southampton, SE is the same as CS except you have to take the SE module in third year - you can still graduate with CS with the exact same modules as a SE student. I hear it's similar everywhere else in the UK. Pick one.

    Both have no girls.

At least with software engineering you can create your own virtual ones.

Not true. My course has about 55% boys 35% girls. Computer science would probably be your best bet however I would require to look at the modules before given a valid opinion.

As said, it entirely depends on the content of the course. As far as universities are concerned, I would personally pick Edinburgh - but only because I've actually been to the department and met some of the staff The Informatics department is excellent, and has a reputation that belies the university's standings in the league tables.

Most software engineering courses are specific permutations of the computer science degree, and either will allow you to work in industry as a programmer. Some programming jobs will prefer a computer science qualification, but it depends. I would advise you looking at the course material and making a decision based on that - otherwise, pick the most flexible degree. After all, your interests may change

I'm at Glasgow and the only difference here between the two is a couple of modules and that SE students are required to do a summer work placement after their 3rd year

    Hi

I just had a look at the Edinburgh Uni web site.

What would have appealed to me, if I had to do my CompSci degree again, would be BEng CompSci with Management.

Then again, I just had a look at their list of modules:

    https://www.star.euclid.ed.ac.uk/ipp/utcmpwm.htm

Not much management in there, to be honest.

I don't really understand why UK universities have to put Functional programming into first year courses. I would have preferred App programming or something...
