Maybe if your computer is constantly indexing the storage. It's really simple to turn it off for certain hard drives, etc.

But other than that, the amount of storage you have is going to have a pretty small impact on the overall speed of your computer.

Indexing is a process that speeds up file searches on your computer by keeping an updated record of where everything is. It does regularly scans through, and is quite handy if you search for things a lot.

If on the other hand you can generally find your own files then you can disable it, or tell it just to index certain places (Right click on the drive in My computer, go to Properties and untick the indexing checkbox at the bottom of the properties window)

I honestly can't imagine a single person who would require 2000 Gigabytes for a home computer. It really baffles me that manufacturers are putting these massive hard drives in their PC's when they probably know full well that it will never fill up past even 10%. I saw a very good deal recently on a computer that had great specs but a 2 TB hard drive. I could not bring myself to buy it because I knew how much space would be wasted, and that would frustrate me to no end.

You have no idea how much space some people use/need.
Also you've got to bear in mind that some of these computers are used by people who run companies or whatever.
In other words, some people's careers require a lot of space. I mean, say you're some CEO with a lil laptop. It makes life so easy if you can carry loads of stuff on a laptop as opposed to having to upload and download stuff onto the same laptop due to its lack of space.

I hope this makes sense. But I can see your point, there's only so much a teenage nerd in his mother's basement can download before even he realises that it's too much :P

In terms of games, just had a look at my Steam folder..

Shogun 2 takes up 25gb, Lead 4 Dead 2 another 13, Portal 2... 11gb.... Fallout New Vegas: 9gb. Fallout 3: 8gb. Sonic Generations... 8.5gb.

These swiftly add up! In total, my steam games come to just under 200gb.

So, yes. I could quite probably easily fill a 2tb hard drive if I downloaded the remainder of the games on my account....

I have 500GB and I've hit the max many times over the years...so I probably think I'd be able to make use of a 2TB HD.

Oh I see, so this indexing feature is only useful if you use the 'search' function in the start menu to find stuff?

On various storage devices around the house i'm probably using about 5/6 TBs of storage (plus another 1/2TB for dupes of important data). But there is a limit on what a user may need as primary storage on a machine (rather than on secondary drives, either internally or externally).
