Why do people obsess over celebrities?

I do not understand overly obsessive people. There was this one girl I knew, and she followed this celebrity everywhere, went to every single event and even turned up at the National Theatre on various occasions to see her after shows.
I appreciate certain celebrities (actors and actresses) for their work, and I do know their birthdays, but I am not one for having to know what they are doing every minute of every day. I can function on things that aren't to do with them.
Basically, if people are really fond of somebody, fine, but if you are severely limited to solely talking, thinking and doing things that involve said celebrity, you have a problem.
