Re: How much sleep do you really need?
Its hard to say, there've been times when I've had 5 and woken up like 'WOOOO BRING IT ON SUCKAH'. I think how you feel when you wake up is more to do with your sleep cycles, I have an app that wakes you up at the best part of your sleep cycle to feel refreshed but I never use it...

Re: How much sleep do you really need?
I still don't believe in number of hours slept is a measurement for how much we need but rather quality of sleep and at which part of the sleep cycle you wake from and whether or not you woke up naturally.
If I am unnaturally woken up during sleep because of the phone/doorbell/cars/bangs then i will likely sleep longer and can easily sleep 12 hours being woken up 5 or more times
compared to if I slept 3 hours and woke up naturally.
I also believe that you should sleep when you want at anytime during the day or night for as long or as little as your body needs. -
Re: How much sleep do you really need?
If your an adult you must limit yourself to 7 hours because anything over that leads to an earlier death and think of all the time sleeping in that hour you have lost as well.I found out the fact that more than 7 hours is bad for you, recently and was shell shocked because Ithought you needed more than 7 hours sleep.

Re: How much sleep do you really need?
I can function on no sleep(most Mondays I skip sleep[the most I've gone without sleep is around 35 hours so I can't say beyond that]), but I like around 12 hours sleep. 6 hours feels like a novelty though on a monday or a thursday. I'm more productive the more sleep I get but there's never been a point where I've thought, 'I'm going to pass out from exhaustion if I don't sleep' or that I've not turned up to college due to lack of sleep.

Re: How much sleep do you really need?
OP - as you can see this is a very individual thing. You will know by how you feel (when you get up and later during the day) if you got enough sleep. I have very bad sleep these days since I've got older and I can tell you it has completely stopped any progress in the gym and considerably reduced my ability to learn new things. Sleep is really fantastic. I've tried both so I know - getting 9-10hrs of deep sleep per night has an effect far greater than any mild steroids I've used.

Re: How much sleep do you really need?
The 'expert' opinions are dangerous imo. Imagine settling on 7 hours because they say you'll die earlier if you have any more or less, and then becoming severely sleep deprived because your individual need is far greater. Your body should be the informer for your sleep, not any human being. Who all say different things and won't admit they're clueless. Still, as long as there's money in it!!!

Re: How much sleep do you really need?YOU DON'T SAY?(Original post by zjs)
You should be sleeping 7-9 hours.
More is generally too much, and less is generally too little, however you might feel about it.
That said, there are exceptions, such as illness, where it's obviously advisable to sleep longer.
I've just slept the best part of 3.5 hours and feel better than I have in weeks.
