I've applied to Norwood. Yeah its ugly as cra* from the outside, but looking round it the inside was modern and clean and the rooms seemed larger than those in westwood ( I currently have a friend at Bath who is in westwood and I stayed over on the day of my open day). Also the views from Norwood where honestly incredible which basically sold it to me.
My friend while I was at bath showed me round other accommodation and i was able to hear peoples feedback. He and actually told me not to apply to marl/souls as he felt they were a lot less sociable as you only share a flat with about 7 people, compared to like 16-20 in westwood, so there is a lot less going on, however his friend who was there was in an unfortunate situation in which she was on the ground floor where there are only 4/5 in a flat.
Westwood seemed like a great place to live, I visited on a hot day and everyone was outside on the grassy areas that surround westwood having a bbq. very very social. However I was worried by just how many people share a house. which is why i favoured norwood where there is only like 10 people per flat.

In regards to sharing toilets and showers its really not bad at all, I was at York uni for a term before realising I had made a mistake of course etc, and I was in standard accommodation and at first I was horrified by the thought of not having my own bathroom. But bathrooms are cleaned everyday and are spotless, ( and were spotless in bath when I was staying in Westwood) and in my entire term at York I never had to wait for the shower/ toilet. This is why I am personally not bothered about ensuite and would rather save the dollaaaaa

btw couldn't be bothered to read through everything I wrote so excuse any mistakes etc.

Yeah...that's rubbish. Living with 6 people is great as you know each other really well, and most of our flat has dinner together as well as corridor duvet nights etc. I love our "flat family", and the fact we have a corridor with a carpet and good sized kitchen makes sitting around a lot easier than in a prison-style linoleum corridor. Plus you usually know the flat opposite really well, and over half the block, giving you a huge pool of people to socialise with (as well as your entire course). We also spent the whole sunny week sitting on the grass outside Solsbury, everyone does it. It's only unsociable if you hate your whole flat, which is really unlikely!

I have friends in Westwood, and while having 20 people means huge parties in Fresher's Week and makes it better for hosting pre's, they say everyone's now split into groups of 3-4 and they don't know about half their corridor well at all. It's inevitable you can't hang around in a group of 20.

At the end of the day, it's the people not the bricks and mortar that make a place "sociable", and most people ARE out to be nice and make friends, so any prospective people should just apply to whichever building they prefer.

Yeah sorry forgot to conclude that it really is only the people that matter.

Does anyone know how they decide to group people into rooms? At my sister's uni they grouped people on similar courses, is it the same at bath or is it just the better ones (the ones with more people or whatever) go to the people who applied earlier?

They try to put people in courses so if you're in a small flat most of you will be the same course but if you're in a large flat then there will probably be three different courses amongst the 20 or so people.
They say that they make sure people are with atleast one person who does the same subject but this may not always be the case (they messed up my contract so I wasn't with anyone who did a subject even close to me).

Basically, there's loads of events on, but the main ones that the whole building will go to is the evening ones. Most people went out on all but 1 of the nights. In the daytime, you go to accommodation and subject inductions, and your "Fresher's Crew" take you on the town tours, campus challenge and other stuff. There's a BBQ in daytime and a fair with stalls for the societies and sports clubs.
In the evening everyone just assembles, dresses up, plays drinking games and goes the clubbing thing in the sports hall. There's something for everyone, if going out isn't your thing you don't have to do it everyday.
You do pay to get in to the evening events only (with the bands playing) - you can either pay something like £10 for each one, or £46 for the wristband that covers everything for the week. If you plan to go to most/all of the events,it's definitely worth it, plus you won't have to queue to buy tickets.
Marl/Sols is awesome, you've made the right choice! In FW they got the whole block into one kitchen, and also it's really well placed near the bus stops, gym and parade. And we have a glass wall in the kitchen

I think it's random, but they do try and pair people up sometimes. In our flat we have pharmacology, psychology, politics, civil eng, business and 2 x maths. Next door's flat have 2 x chem, 2 x compsci, sport science, coach ed and languages. Every flat I know with maths people has at least 2 of them, but the other subjects seem to be more scattered and not paired up.

Does everyone do the whole tour thing on freshers, because although the evening events interest me, touring the city I can do on my own. Also what is the ratio of students over 20 because I'll be 21 by the time i'm there and officially a mature student (old I know)?

Well, the crew take the groups round for a couple of hours just to show them what's where, but you probably don't have to come along/can go again whenever you like. It's not so much a historical tour as a "here's the clubs, Topshop and big Sainsbury's".

Students over 20 I'm not sure, but I've met quite a few! In our flat we have 2 people that are 20+, and there's a lot of gap-yearers upstairs, though that might be different in your year with the £9000 fees.

The freshers crew are a bunch of 2nd years who used to live in your building - they basically look after you for the week and take you round places.
