Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Pretty badly, haven't done much work on it as I'm retaking it. Need to just stick with some multiple choice section questions as that's where I screwed up on the most last time.(Original post by needssomehelpplease)
Hows revision for this exam going? -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Try do the multiple choice from AQA exams board. There are much harder compare to edexcel. I 2 papers of AQA multiple choice, went back and do Edexcel, realise Edexcel is so much more straightforward(Original post by captainaesthetic)

Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.
I'm a little worried about the second half. Personally I find the multiple choices the easy bit, I can usually finish them in 25 minutes. But then I get to the second half and I just write too much meaningless crap! And then we'll go through the mark scheme and I'll get two marks for half a page of writing.
How do you guys do Section 2? What are good evaluation marks? How do you approach the question?
Also, grade boundaries for an A seem pretty low. 54ish out of 80. If you get around 30 in the multiple choice bit you could lose 50% of the marks in B. That's a little reassuring, I guess. But I definitely need to work on exam technique for B. -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.First, you should choose the right question to do. So the question where you can answer the 14 marks questions comfortably, as they are the key questions. Second, is good that you can do multiple choice in 25 minutes, make sure they are correct tho. If they are, it leaves you 10 minutes extra to read the info. Read question first, then the info as then you will know what you are looking for from the information. The little question is all about the knowledge, application and analysis, so thats all up to you.(Original post by knowledgecorruptz)

14 marks question: break it into 2 parts. 8 marks for KAA and 6 marks for evaluation.
With this guideline, it helps me to know when I have right enough.
Evaluation is where most people struggle with, including myself but then I manage to fix the problem before my Unit 1 exam.

Here is a mindmap that I created on evaluation and key definitions. Hope it helps

Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Oh wow! That's really useful. Thank you so much. +rep for you. Need to score really high in Unit 1, still need to learn Unit 2!(Original post by ryanboi)

Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.
Time management is important but it seems like you are doing fine. Just remember to do multiple choice as quick as possible and get it right. In the real Unit 1 exam, I got 8 minutes extra from recommended time of 35 minutes on Section A. Another thing is highlight important factors or information from the passage. This saves lots of times as you won't have to re-read the passage again when doing the questions. For big markers question, keep a clear structure. Always try and use diagram for big markers and definitions. Obviously, use related diagram. All these method saves time and it all adds up at the end when you need it the most
Another way to revise is to come here. I know it sounds silly but come to TSR, go to economics forum and try and help others economic problems. In doing so, it helps information to sink in and you will understand more as you will need to understand the content in order to help people

Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Thanks, appreciate it. My nerves have settled after getting a really high mark in my mock. It's all good (Y). Highlighting key info is very useful, I also write out points I'm going to make on the question paper as I go through (evaluation marks, mainly, so I don't forget them).(Original post by ryanboi)

Are you doing A2 at the moment? What did you get in Unit 1?
But yeah, now I need to focus on Unit 2

I would tend to focus more on Unit 2, as Unit 2 contains 30 marks questions which makes Unit 1 questions seems relatively easy. No mate, I am still in AS, doing Economics Unit 2 in summer, same as you. I got 100 UMS for Economics Unit 1. Hopefully, finger cross, the same with Unit 2.

Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Thanks, man. Yeah, I just had no idea how easy it was to score marks. I presume you sat your Eco Unit 1 this January, then? Our mock was the 2012 exam. Do you know what 75 raw would score? What raw mark did you get for 100? Well done on that, btw, you've got a really nice safety net for Unit 2(Original post by ryanboi)

What do you have to write for these 30-markers? -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.It varies each year but I got 75 raw marks.(Original post by knowledgecorruptz)

What do you have to write for these 30-markers?
30 marks:
2 marks-Definition
4 marks-Diagram
12 marks- Points answering the question, explain them well. You need to write 3 points. So each points, you will have to explain them well and earn 4 marks for each point.
12 marks-Evaluation. You made 3 points, now evaluate your point in detail so in total 3 evaluation points.
Tbh, when you set it out like these, it doesn't seems that hard to get 28-30 marks for 30 marks question. -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Cheers, man. You're pretty clued up with this. You don't happen to have another one of those mind-map things for Unit 2, do you? Seriously, the evaluation section of that was so useful - gotta credit you for my mock mark.(Original post by ryanboi)

Are you thinking of doing eco at uni, by any chance? -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Yes, am close in to finish off the mindmap for Unit 2 economics. There are 10 past papers, I did 8 of them so got all the evaluation points and key definitions from all 8 past papers. 2 more to go and I am done. I will send it to you if you want it(Original post by knowledgecorruptz)

8 past papers already! Ah man, you're gonna destroy these exams...we're starting Unit 2 next week
Yeah, I want to do Philosophy and Economics at uni. Looks like we're doing similar subjects - I'm doing geography rather than chemistry, though, so I guess I've got it considerably easier than you.
What maths/ FM modules you doing? And where are you thinking of applying? -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Yeah sure no problem(Original post by knowledgecorruptz)

Ahhh nice stuff
Economics is fun to learn. I like it
. I am going to do C2, FP1 and M1 modules in summer. Already did C1, D1 and S1 in Jan.
I am thinking of applying to LSE, Warwick, UCL, Bath and one other uni which is going to be my backup. My most wanted uni would be LSE
What bout you?
-
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.No Cambridge? Yeah, LSE's top choice for me too. The open day was just amazing(Original post by ryanboi)

Although I should really check out UCL's campus too before jumping to any conclusions.
I'm thinking Oxford (PPE...just because), LSE, UCL...then Notts/ Bristol/Exeter...no idea, tbh :/ Your doing your modules in a totally different order to me. I'm doing M1-2, S1-2, C1-3 this year, and then the rest next year...so many maths exams! -
Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Tbh, Cambridge was one of my choice but then i am not sure if I should waste one of my university option on Cambridge as there is a high chance I might not get in. Yeah lots of maths modules this year. Crazy lol Am going to the open day for LSE in June time. Hopefully is going to be amazing lol.(Original post by knowledgecorruptz)

Re: Edexcel Economics Unit 1, Competitive Markets. Friday 18th May 2012 Pm.Yeah, the open day's awesome. I'd recommend you go for at least two subject lectures, though. I went to anthropology and philosophy.(Original post by ryanboi)

I know what you mean about Cambridge but LSE's just as competitive! But I guess the Cambridge application's a lot more effort (interview, TSA etc.).
Anyway, man, good luck with your maths modules
and if you get the chance, i'd be so grateful for the mindmap
thanks
