Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic? The fact you know nothing shows you obviously haven't passed any type of road test. Please come back when you know anything at all..(Original post by Saif95)
Are they that lazy that they all drive automatic? pffft
I mean how boring are automatic cars? All you do is accelerate and brake...and the car does the rest...you only drive 50% while in a manual you are ACTUALLY driving...100%!
I find it funny that european young girls and old women can drive manual while the big fat stropping north american 'manly' men are struggling with automatic lol.
They always have excuses and arguments but ultimately what it boils down to is they are lazy and they resort to 'driving' go-karts.
See, most of my family are American and when they hear about the manual transmission they start acting like Patrick star from spongebob like 'DUUUH HUYYYY DUHHHH THATS SO HAAAARD'
(hmmph not as hard as that thing you like that's on the midpoint of a male human body though huuh...otherwise they would't complain!!)
I am like are you people stupid? And I tell them the things I wrote above AND MORE!! Like with a manual you have more control..and basically it is actually driving!! And obviously it is hard at first! But with everything, practice makes perfect!
Driving automatics is 'easier' lol...The Americans always want 'easy'...this also explains their burn-out education system. Corrupt and a half that country is, corrupt and a half.
Literally anything....
Even how to make a cup of tea......... -

The real question is why are Brits so ****ing obsessed with Americans? I mean seriously, why the **** do you care? Concern yourself with business that's yours and let me say, this isn't it.

Pretty sure that when I hop into my car and turn it on and accelerate I'm actually driving and it's not a figment of my imagination. -
Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?my response is in my original post. Don't like it, oh well. Don't let me stop you from worshipping Americans.(Original post by HSG1992)
Cool story sis, needs more stupidity.

It's an American troll too...It'll never stop eating... -
Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?I see that you listened to him and added a pinch more stupidity. You complain about us hating on Americans then proceed to suggest we [already] worship Americans.(Original post by Sharri5)
my response is in my original post. Don't like it, oh well. Don't let me stop you from worshipping Americans.
OP = original post/poster. Refers to the person or post that started the thread. You are neither. Although the OP made quite a bad thread his question was answered. Can't blame him for not knowing, but if he's still reading now he does.I don't care what you claim to be. My response is in my op. -
Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?Haha, ok, now I will. I don't see why mods haven't already permabanned it. I've always thought it was a she but someone referred to it as a he and it didn't act offended...(Original post by HSG1992)
Time for us to stop feeding the troll sir.

Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?whats the rough percntage split between those two sets of drivers?(Original post by digitalfever)
Yes.
here in the uk I reckon its about 90% manual and 10% auto -
Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?
There are many reasons why driving a manual is better than driving an automatic:
1) Better performance
2) Better fuel consumption
3) Cheaper servicing
4) Easier to maintain
5) Ability to use the correct gear on hills
6) Doesn't suddenly change gear in the middle of a corner
7) You can push start it
8) You can tow it as far as you want
9) You don't wheel spin as much in the snow
10) Faster gear change
11) The gearbox doesn't overheat
12) They're cheaper
13) Handling is improved because the car is lighter
14) And they're just cooler to drive

Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?
Why most Americans drive automatics? Something to do with a reflection of it being an advanced society, cars were manual first and then became automatic.
Why cars became automatic? Something to do with the 50s where bigger was better and easier was the in thing. Plus cars of the 50s were extremely difficult to operate due to the clutch and steering being rather heavy and in the mid 50s carmarkers were keen on women to buy their vehicles or at least play a larger role in the decision of what the family car would be. Therefore they were keen to show how easy the cars were to operate by having power steering and automatic gearbox.
The other thing to consider, ever driven in Detroit or Chicago or anywhere in the major US metropolitan or urban areas? There can be traffic congestions of start stop traffic for the entire length of the motorway (known as Interstates) from one end to a city to the other end. Plus most American or North American cities for that matter are laid out in an intersecting grid system and other than some of the biggest cities there aren't many bypass or ring roads for them, you just get onto the Interstate or State route that brings you as close as possible to your destination then it is start-stop traffic for several miles.
The other reason American cars are generally much bigger engined and they are geared to cruise at a fairly low RPM, torque dips in the engine is quite usual so putting an automatic gearbox somewhat helps. Since most cars are automatics anyway few would actually need to drive a manual.
95% of all new cars sold in both Canada and USA are automatics or semi-automatics.(Original post by internet tough guy)

The stats are somewhat skewed though as over 70% of all passenger vehicles are bought by fleets and the biggest buyer of vehicles are state or Federal government procurement, these are always automatic whether it is a small tiny Chevrolet Spark or Ford Fiesta or a big 18 wheeler tank transporting lorry or even that M1A1 Abrams tank they are all purchased as automatics for strategic reasons. In fact the US Army and Air Force no longer has any vehicles that are manual. -
Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?Either way we need to stop feeding this ridiculous troll(Original post by James82)
There are many reasons why driving a manual is better than driving an automatic:
1) Better performance-False many high performance cars use automatics/ semiauto (look at f1)
2) Better fuel consumption-false how you drive impacts mpg more than its gearbox
3) Cheaper servicing really tell me how the cost of a new clutch burnt out is turning out?
4) Easier to maintain depends on how you drive
5) Ability to use the correct gear on hills can do this with most modern auto's
6) Doesn't suddenly change gear in the middle of a cornerif you are driving correctly you shouldn't have to worry about this
7) You can push start iti'll give you this
8) You can tow it as far as you wantput it in neutral?
9) You don't wheel spin as much in the snowyup you get this too
10) Faster gear changereally? tell me that a drag cars gear changes are slower than your and get back to me
11) The gearbox doesn't overheat true some of the time
12) They're cheaperif you burn up your clutch it can cost as much as messing up a auto
13) Handling is improved because the car is lightertell this to the m5, or the gtr, or the ferrari scuderia, or a porsche pdk
14) And they're just cooler to drive
yea pretty much
