Why do the Americans drive automatic?
Are they that lazy that they all drive automatic? pffft

I mean how boring are automatic cars? All you do is accelerate and brake...and the car does the rest...you only drive 50% while in a manual you are ACTUALLY driving...100%!

I find it funny that european young girls and old women can drive manual while the big fat stropping north american 'manly' men are struggling with automatic lol.

They always have excuses and arguments but ultimately what it boils down to is they are lazy and they resort to 'driving' go-karts.

See, most of my family are American and when they hear about the manual transmission they start acting like Patrick star from spongebob like 'DUUUH HUYYYY DUHHHH THATS SO HAAAARD'
(hmmph not as hard as that thing you like that's on the midpoint of a male human body though huuh...otherwise they would't complain!!)

I am like are you people stupid? And I tell them the things I wrote above AND MORE!! Like with a manual you have more control..and basically it is actually driving!! And obviously it is hard at first! But with everything, practice makes perfect!

Driving automatics is 'easier' lol...The Americans always want 'easy'...this also explains their burn-out education system. Corrupt and a half that country is, corrupt and a half.

Because all their roads are straight. No requirement for that drop down a gear and slam the gas to fly round the bend.

My friends American parents say its just easier than driving a manual. I agree, I want to pass my test in a manual and then drive an Automatic, its basically Go and Stop pedals and thats it.

I think if we could make a shift over to automatic it would be wonderful. Your 'it's actual driving' argument doesn't suffice when you consider the extra time, money and effort a manual requires. If you want to drive a manual, then drive one - no one's stopping you, so stop complaining about others who are harming no one under what is actually quite a sensible system.

Wow, thanks for this absolutely great post.

Let me guess, all of the Bugattis, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and so on that come only as automatic or semi-automatic aren't cars that you really drive, right?

    Why don't we like manuals?

    Well...
    (1) Having a manual doesn't necessarily give you more control
    (2) Automatics are becoming more fuel efficient than manuals
    (3) 'Actually driving' is in no way reliant on whether or not one has a manual.
    (4) Not having to worry about shifting is simply easier. People don't stall. You can't accidentally grind a gear.
    (5) Due to the intelligence of modern automatic transmissions, an automatic transmission can shift a hell of a lot faster than a human can.

I'm sure there are more reasons, but here are just some.

    1. It is much more simple and for most that is a good thing. What's the point of making driving more difficult if you just want to get from A to B, like the majority of people? Not everyone actually enjoys driving.

    2. The roads are flat and straight. There is no need for a manual there, except if you live in fairly rural areas in certain states.

why use a manual when you can use an automatic? theyre easier simpler and a damn sight less of a pain to stop and start on a hill with

Can't eat a burger and change gear at the same time.

Because it's a lot easier due to the fact that many of their roads are generally straighter and have fewer turns as well as the fact that their country is a lot larger and going from one area to another area would be a mission by car.

Don't use UK standards on US concerning roads and cars. Thats why everyone says American cars turn poorly because they've been made to drive on American roads which are straighter.

    It is due

    a) to the obesity... all those spare tyres flop into the gearstick area making it very difficult to operate the lever; the feet are relatively unimpeded making automatics the only realistic choice for Bubba and Mrs Bubba

    b) to the carrying of firearms which is every American's right under the Cawnsteetooshun; in several tragic cases Bubba has confused the stick shift with his gun

I only realised that the vast majority of Americans drive automatic a few years ago. Before that I've always wondered how in TV shows/movies, the characters never seem to ever touch the gear stick, and how literally anyone could drive first time without much hassle of the car stalling or studdering along.

The real question is why are Brits so ****ing obsessed with Americans? I mean seriously, why the **** do you care? Concern yourself with business that's yours and let me say, this isn't it.

Why do people like you assume that people give a **** about driving 'properly'? Why don't people like you ever consider that some people just couldn't care less and just want a car to get them from point A to point B in the easiest manner possible?

In the case of the Bugatti: A manual transmission cannot handle the 1,000+ HP engine.

In the case of all of them: A human would shift too slow and thus ruin the 0-60 time of the cars. It's also a matter of handling and so on. The internal computer in these cars can do things a lot faster than a human. I.e. it can downshift in order to accelerate faster than a human could, etc.

Re: Why do the Americans drive automatic?
The real question is why does anyone care? If you want to drive an automatic, drive an automatic. I like to drive a manual, so I will drive a manual. If someone else wants to drive an automatic then I would be a lucky man for that to be the biggest thing I have to worry about. And even if it was the biggest thing I had to worry about, I still wouldn't worry about it.

To be fair, though, gear sticks are something of an oddity that were forced upon us when the car was invented and that we no longer need. Absolutely everything else in your engine is regulated - why should the gears not also be? The answer, of course, is that at the time of creation they couldn't build a computer to handle your gears for you so you had to do it. This is no longer the case so it seems sensible to expect manual gear changes to go out of fashion at some point.

A ridiculous generalisation but I genuinely am interested in America because it's a fascinating country and I am curious about its history, culture and current affairs.

Here's a generalisation of my own (which applies to a significant amount of Americans including yourself but not all thankfully).

Why are you Americans so self-absorbed and ignorant when it comes to issues that occur outside your land?

Pretty sure that when I hop into my car and turn it on and accelerate I'm actually driving and it's not a figment of my imagination.

its cheaper to buy a manual car here because they are so many of them.
you would have to look to find a automatic that is suitable for you.
not to mention if you need to get it repaired at a garage it will cost you more money and you will have to wait longer for the parts.
and for that person who said auto changes the gear faster then a human. i seen a episode on top gear where they used the same model car but one was on auto and one was in manual same driver. the manual car did a faster lap. it was your normal car not a ultra super car or anything ..

personally i wouldnt drive a auto i dont like them. maybe i like the confidence boost knowing i can get into any manual car and drive it all my family and extended family can drive manuals so i would feel not worthy i guess if i couldnt. i have a friend who wants to learn in a automatic car and im trying to get her not to ok i know its her car etc etc but i dont think she can afford one. maybe im just more realistic then her i dont know. i know when im driving and im going into roundabouts or other stuff on the road i can really see the point of driving a manual and i get like this little buzz going on when im shifting up and down the gears perfectly. then again a car is a big toy for me i like driving its fun for me. i would get bored if i just had 2 pedals. i know they are making improvements with auto's but how in the hell does a automatic gearbox know certains things about the road ahead. maybe its just me and my mentality but i liking know its me doing the driving or me dropping a gear so i can go slower through a bad but in the road and soon as i want a can accelerate . its second nature changing gears to me and i can watch the people on the road and the traffic lights just as good as someone in a auto im sure. and they really and speed ramps the size of little mountains in my town so im glad i have a manual. im speaking as a person in europe here we mostly drive manuals so if you didnt know how to drive a manual you would be at a disadvantage. hypothetically if something came up where you had to drive a car with a manual gearbox so you could bring your friend to the hostipal you wouldnt be able to !!

i think americans are victims of their situation they just got stuck in a rut where everyone just did it because it was easier and seeing what the traffic looks like in LA i can see their point and i bet salespeople were more happy to get money out of them. they prefer their way so leave it to them i guess. but i will always be driving a manual car i dont like the way they drive on the right side of the road either but nothing i can do about that.

the only thing i ever drove that was automatic was my tractor lawn mower .. which is perfectly fine because its for cutting grass.
