If you have taken this module before what advice would you give me in doing well?
I want an A, which according to the past two years is 75/100 RAW Marks give or take. -

Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011There arent many past papers though(Original post by devski)
Plenty of practice using past papers. With modules like this, I believe this is the best way to revise
because it is a new spec

Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011
I advise having a look at some of the old spec papers. Yes, there are differences but a lot of the old unit 4 stuff is in COMP3. Just be sure to check the COMP3 spec against the questions that seem like they're in the right area as there are points where you don't need as much detail any more. eg you don't need to know about Interrupt Service Routines any more (thank the maker).

as for advice to do well, as well as cramming the theory content, take a look at the current spec mark schemes and think "what might lose me marks". A lot of the time it will be not using the correct terminology or being able to provide a real world example for concepts covered in the theory. Work on these skills. There is a glossary in the back of the A2 book, learn it well. -

Has there been any questions from the old spec that have been put in the new COMP3 paper?
Also, what do you think may potentially come up? Because it is a new spec meaning that they couldn't have asked everything.
My guess would be...
- Information Hiding & Abstraction
- Algorithms
- Intractable Problems
- FSM/Turing Machine
- RPN/BNF
- OOP (Haven't asked in some time)
- Recursion
- Stacks & Queues
- Binary Tree
- Trees & Graphs
- Simulation
- Real Numbers
- Normalisation + SQL
Feel free to add
Would appreciate if you could let me know.
Thanks -
Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011add Logic programming to that list. usually adding facts or rules or writing a goal state to discover something about a knowledge base. these questions came up a lot in the old spec and have been in the new spec as well. lots of examples to be found in past papers.(Original post by exam2k10)

They can ask that as well. I got a feeling that they will ask about hashing as it has not come up in the past papers so far.
Also, would you say it is advisible to finish revising the content during the three day weekend and then start doing the CPT4 & CPT5 papers, leading up to the exams? -
Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011Just taken a look at the specification and can find no mention of Logic programming. It was in the old specification but has never been in any new specification past papers.(Original post by mister c)

Pretty sure logic programming is not on the comp 3 syllabus and won't be tested. -

. Need an A in this and I havent finished revising
.
Am I screwed? I intend on going flat on CPT4, CPT5 as it will fully rinse out any doubts I have. For example, recursion and real numbers -
Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011You should be fine, we've got half-term to work on Comp3(Original post by exam2k10)

Take a look at the specification: http://web.aqa.org.uk/qual/gce/pdf/AQA-2510-W-SP.PDF and use it to identify what you can/can't do.
I don't particularly like the textbook - at least with the specification you know exactly what's going to be tested.
Also this site is quite good (if you haven't already seen it): http://www.starteractivity.com/ictle...p3/cc2qa1.html -
Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011The problem is that the specification isn't very detailed... but the textbook can be detailed in the wrong places(Original post by darkskill)

I dunno why this exam is 2 and half hours long. I swear the max time we would need is like 1 hour 30 minutes?
I haven't done any of the mock papers so I won't know, but when I did AQA GCSE ICT they said the paper was 2 hours but I finished in an hour and got an A*. Then at AS, the paper was an hour but there I finished on time. -
Re: AQA COMP3 June 2011Watch, they will put a question on hashing.(Original post by sagederby)
It is also missing some chapters - there's nothing in it on binary trees or hashing. The missing chapters are on the aqa website in the Teachers Resource Bank.
They asked about insertionsort and binary search in the past two seasons. Bound to ask about hashing. Made notes on it, just need to reinforce it into my head.

because it is a new spec
