    Up to £40k is low
    £40k-£75k is average
    £75k-£100k is well off
    £100k + is good
    £200k + is high

It's all relative, depending on where one lives.

And you are only of the deluded people I was talking about.
Anything less than £40k is low? What world do you live in?
And in terms of average, in the UK that is around £25k (or maybe a tad less). No where near what you think it is.
Hell, the average HOUSEHOLD income isn't much more than £35k.
I live in the real world, sweetheart.

The national UK average wage is £25k (I'm not stupid ) but that is taking into account places such as Wales, Scotland and parts of the north which are very poor and it drags it down.

40k-75k is average... do you just ignore statistics?

    75k-100k is just 'well off'?...

We're talking about the whole of the UK here.

So a significant number of teachers and doctors still in specialist training are on low salaries? If a lot of GPs and head teachers earn an average amount why do the right wing press constantly decry them as fat cats?

I think some people in this thread are in for a bit of a reality check when they eventually find themselves in the world of work (I know this thread isn't about what you expect to earn, but it is quite clear that some people are posting what they expect - and to be blunt some of them are totally ridiculous).
    This.

Because the tabloid right wing press is an embarrassment.

Besides, they may raise an objection to how much they receive in relation to their standards and efficiency

I stand by my original post.

    Does it matter?

If they said civil servants, management consultants or theatre stars what would you do with the information?

They would gain a little more understanding of what kind of field of employment would provide you with such financial prospects, amongst other things. Why would it bother you?

Unfortunately your opinion means nothing then. Figures have shown you to be completely wrong. If you stand by an opinion which is wrong you classify as an idiot. It's like me still believing the world is flat. The average salary is around 25k-30k, and even that's pushing it a little. You need about 21k to live comfortably. Saying 100k is just 'well off' is stupid, and under 40k is poor?...

You guys must be commiting some kind of ATM fraud if you're earning £50k+ right after graduating.

Do you think I'm bothered by an arbitrary figure? As f1mad has said, it is relative and varies from family to family depending on household expenditure, cost of living in their area and aspirations. Places such as Wales / some parts of Scotland / parts of the north are rather poor and this drags the national wage down. By no means is it reflective of the entire nation, thankfully.

Once again, I stand by my original post and figures.

Surely depends on your qualifications, age and experience, what industry location where you work etc. No point quoting national average - if you are a 20 y.o who has less than 2 years of work experience.

Well I used to think that my dad's income of ~25k per annum was pretty decent until I moved to a school full of rich kids and my dad started parking his 20-year-old Volvo a few streets away from the school so no-one would see how old and battered his car was...

Thinking about it now I think that 20-30k may be below average. For me personally a good salary would be 35k per annum, although if I had children or lived in the city then I would like to earn a wee bit more than that.

what intrigues me is how do people know what their parents earn? Do they read their bank statements or ask them or something? I have no idea what my parents earn, i know we're not doing too bad but i couldn't say they earn x or y amount.
