What do you Brits have against Americans?

1) Wow, I'm glad you have a head. Clearly 6/50 = 0/50. Glad to know Britain has caught up in Math.
2) Well yes. Just like how Britain is America's slave.
3) Haha, just a tad "bit". Well good sir, Why the hell not? Since we're better than all of you, we might as well help you out. For our benefit of course
4) I won't disagree with that. It's like 1.1%. With the backing of our Evangelical Republican society it's pretty cool. It's still legal to lynch people here. Cept we just call it death penalty ofc.
5)*claps*
Nazi's, xenophobes, nuke targets and relatively useless country. Better than America? Haha please.

1) Top work, just outstanding. However chap, and I can't stress this enough, YOUR GOVERNMENT DOES NOT PERMIT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE EITHER. Only a handful of states do.
2) On the basis that its government blindly follows yours into horrific and pointless wars?
3) Why not? Because you aren't the world police y'know? Time to put Team America back on the shelf and stop trying to control the world.
4) Come off it, the bible belt and it's assortment of red-necks is far more than 1.1% of the country's population.
5) Germany - Good economy, good beer, a football fan's haven (I should point out, proper football. Not the puff rugby you call football), produce good quality cars.
Holland - Decriminalised weed, friendly country (I'm convinced the two are linked).
Japan & South Korea - Very welcoming, humble people at the forefront of scientific & technological advancement.

What country in the world is cosmopolitan outside of cities?

Many ( Parts of America, Germany, France(ish) etc)? The reason the UK is not is probably due to it being an island thus has no bordering countries.

I beg to differ. It's painful watching American audiences watching some of our comedians. Here they get immediate responses, in America it takes them a while to get it.

Unique to England, no. But it's true that sarcasm and dry humour - which is a staple of many British comedy series and films - does go over American audiences' heads a lot of the time. Watch any English comedian do a comedy programme over in America - the audience barely react. It's really odd, but that's not to say that every American doesn't get it. Just that American comedy is seen as more slapstick than English, and that it takes a while to get used to our own comedy.

No, that makes sense. She just made it sound as if nobody but the English ever used sarcasm or wry insults as a form of humor.

This made me smile. Do you really think sarcasm and wry insults are unique only to England? That it's some elusive form of humor that you'd have to explain to an American?

That's a form of humor. Not an English form of humor.

Thank You! Just because you dont think it's funny doesn't mean you dont understand it.

That's true as well, as I've watched English comedies on PBS and while I got the joke, I didn't find it very funny. Just different senses of humor, really.

(Not to say that English people aren't funny. I have a few English friends and I think they're hilarious )

Welling seeing that the North West has the whitest constituency in the UK, you sir are full of ****. When I lived in York for 4 years, seeing a coloured face that was not a tourist was very rare, so yet again, you are either a liar or lived in some very abnormal place.

Who mentioned racial hate gangs?
You, not me
Stop purposefully exaggeration my point in order to make a strawman argument.

This is pulled straight from the wiki page of the UK.

'Ethnic diversity varies significantly across the UK. 30.4% of London's population[275] and 37.4% of Leicester's[276] was estimated to be non-white as of June 2005, whereas less than 5% of the populations of North East England, Wales and the South West were from ethnic minorities according to the 2001 census.[277] As of 2011, 26.5% of primary and 22.2% of secondary pupils at state schools in England are members of an ethnic minority'

Across the entire country on average a quarter of school children are from an ethnic minority.

And the 5% statistic is from 11 years ago. The number of people from ethnic minorities has only increased since then.

I'm not exaggerating anything. 1 in 4 people my age aren't white British. But of course that's not believable for you even if it is a government backed statistic.

Because apparently we don't blend with other cultures.

And no, the North West doesn't have the whitest consituency. You're full of ****.

I think the question 'do the British have certain ideas about Americans' (and vice versa) is a very different one from 'do Brits hate Americans'. I would agree that the first is true - you can never really know enough about a country to be able to sum it up without generalising to some extent, even if you live there! - but would disagree with the latter. I think it might be true to say that there are a number of negative perceptions about America as a whole in the UK, but these are not held universally, and nor do they equate to anything as visceral as 'hatred' or unreasoning as simply having something 'against' Americans.

I guess the next question is, 'why'? Keeping an eye on the news of late, one gets the impression that various politicians in America are making a very concerted effort to literally reverse the progress that has been made in the arena of women's rights over the last century. I fully understand that this is something that not all, or even many, Americans agree with, but it is scary. I think a lot of politically-aware Britons are well aware of Britain's dependence on America for any real global power, and are also aware of America's status as a 'superpower', making it very easy to feel uneasy when Americans do things like re-elect George Bush, claim that global warming isn't happening (once again, not all Americans I know -- but several powerful ones!), and then start attacking women's rights to control what happens to their own bodies. If America gives this kind of lead, what can be expected for the rest of the world? I think some of the negative perceptions of America in this country are less hatred and more fear. For example, I find it terrifying that in one of the most powerful countries in the world, there are states that possess politicians who support banning abortion whilst being perfectly happy that the death penalty carries on.

Political concerns aside, I think another reason why Brits might stereotype Americans (and vice versa) is a simple lack of comprehension. Personally, when I visited America (to meet my now-fiancé's parents - I'm definitely not an American-hater!!), I felt more alien and foreign than I did travelling in China. I ended up stuck in Chicago on my own and had to catch the train down to Little Rock and was just constantly bombarded with things that felt very, very strange to me. Even things like the train conductor coming down and saying "now the train's very busy tonight so you're going to be making friends with the person sitting next to you". I know it seems a small thing, but in my experience of taking trains in the UK the usual drill if a train is full is to try to avoid eye contact with the person next to you at all costs, not make friends with them. I think the fairly common American characteristic of being quite outgoing and friendly, even with strangers, can come across as being rude and off-putting to British people, whilst we can probably come across off as rude and off-putting to them for not being chatty!

Of course, these are all generalisations, and I'm sure many British people will disagree with my characterisation of us as reserved, but that pretty much reflects my experience. I never thought of myself as 'shy' with strangers until I found myself in Chicago train station with no idea what to do with all of the people asking me my life story after two seconds' acquaintance.

I actually really, really like most standard American chaps, I rate them alongside the Australians. I just cannot stand any of their politicians.

Erm, take a closer look at those figures and then think about how statistics work.
The 2011 figures are still an average across the nation, so those school which are majority ethnic down South counter act those which are mainly white up North.

1) Your argument was that our entire country was homophobic. Not only does the 6/50 automatically destroy that argument, now you're trying to make the same point by saying that just because it is not allowed by the Federal Government, it automatically speaks for each and every state. Also, as for the discrimination which gay people face, as you say (and I agree to), the very vocal orthodox catholics, there are more people who sympathize with them.
2) Yeah, more or less. Probrem?
3) Why not? We're much better off than almost every country (although I will admit, that Scandinavian countries aren't that far behind). We also have the best military. Why don't we try and clear radical insurgents? Unless you're telling me the Taliban was great for Afghanistan
4) It probably is. But I can't see it being much more than 10% of the population. I'll concede defeat on this point if you manage to cite a valid source against it though
5) Germany - Evil, evil people trying to utilize austerity measures on the failing EU countries (PIIGS), more or less supporting the rich and denouncing the poor and making citizens pretty much live like actual slaves (the other times when I said slave, I meant it figuratively, in case you think you can burn me for equivocation)
Holland - Not that bad, but you can't seriously tell me that it's better than America
South Korea - Children who're either studying until they die or playing Starcraft until they die. And then their very friendly neighbours to the North are playing BOOM BOOM BOOM with them.
Japan - Wierd and xenophobic people who are even more patriotic than Americans (Banzai Attacks, Kamikaze to name a few). Wierd as in they revere caniballistic pornstars (will cite when I find the article), and xenophobic....
I was born here, so I can outline most of the problems lol
I don't "hate" Americans i just despise your stereotypes on British people. You seem to believe we all worship the queen and have crooked teeth and say "Cheerio" and "Splendid", when its nothing like that.

Basically stereotyping is the cause and if you have ever played online gaming *If you don't live in a cave* you would understand that it goes both ways i join in the banter all the time but i also have American "Online friends" that i have known for many years and with all that said....

Lets have a tea party and watch the queen on the television in my castle! :chaplin:

North East and South West are the lowest ethnic proportion. Meaning South East, North West and Midlands are higher.

And I never said that schools weren't mainly white. But mainly white and all white are totally different. For a country with a majority white population we have younger generations coming in at nearly a quarter from an ethnic background. This idea that we're all racist xenophobes is laughable. Look at any government backed statistics on the demographics of people by their background and you'll see there are still a lot of non whites up north.

So instead of trying to poke feeble holes into statistics and demographics that you either haven't looked at or don't understand, why not leave your house and go and meet somebody who isn't white and is still British.

I'd bet anything if you walked 15 minutes in any direction (assuming you don't live in the arse end of nowhere) you'll pass somebody who isn't white.

aah, **** this ****.

While you may have given the world the best two comedians of the past 3 decades (Bill Hicks & George Carlin), you sure as hell didn't appreciate them, Hicks was far better welcomed by the British. Other than that your contribution to the world stage has been, on the whole, negative - a mainly right-wing government, a horrific foreign policy, one of the countries that started off the whole nuclear weapons ****, rampant capitalism, an atrocious capital punishment system, the CIA - Your country is nowhere near perfect.

Well seeing that my county has ~ 5% ethnic folks, I might be walking for a looong time :giggle:

You still never addressed my point about papers printing racial hate yet still selling with no complaints, therefore many people must agree or passively ignore it showing that they don't want to stop racism.

5%..... So 1 in 20 people you pass will be. Or weren't you clever enough to work that one out?

I have no idea what paper you are reading pal. It's not from Britain. I have never once seen an article that is blatantly racist or is in favour of xenophobia or racism. Not one. There has never been an article like that published in any paper from the well informed Times or Guardian to the celeb and page 3 peddling papers like The Sun.

Ever.

And yeah the vast majority of people want to stop racism. Because racism isn't founded on a rational argument using evidence to support it's claims of other races being lesser. It's just unfounded hatred.

Racism is only ever drilled into two people.

1) People who's parents were inherently racist who have passed on this hate to their kids.

2) People who are too ****ing stupid or ignorant to look past the colour of a persons skin to see their qualities.

I'm guessing you're both?

..implying that a counties distribution is perfectly equal :curious: I will be lucky if I see anyone with ethnic origins if I walk to the shops.

As for newspapers, how about that everyone from the Middle East is referred to by their religion?
It is not a Saudi, Afghani, Pakistani, or Kurd, but always "A Muslim".
Do we call all Europeans " A Christian" or by their nationality?
Did you recall the articles in the news about how Taoists might have been involved in killing an English man, or how Chinese might have been involved?

They may be grouped as muslims because the probable cause of their actions that creates news worthy stories are driven by their religion. And you can't call Europeans Christian... some EU countries have a christian minority. Meaning that's misrepresentation. However in the countries you listed, Islam is the vast majority. Saudi is close to 100%.

If you genuinely believe that newspapers and news channels are openly and overtly promoting widespread racism then you have totally missed the point of the article.

The rest of UK is not like you.

A third of the residents of London are from ethnic backgrounds.

To even try and create a logical proof that we are racist xenophobes when our own capital city is 1/3 non white, is unbelievably stupid. You may be part of some backwards racist community but the rest of UK doesn't share your ethos.

I'm too bored now to continue arguing when every piece of credible evidence, from statistics on the younger generations (in school), the current demographics for ethnic communities and population statistics of ethnic communities in London has been ignored and sidestepped with a feeble argument by a backwards thinking racist.

Judging by the row of red gems on your username, it looks like the rest of TSR is too.

PS, QED means 'which was to be demonstrated' or in short 'as demonstrated.' The only thing you've demonstrated is a lack of intelligent thought. Not the fictional racist beliefs of a nation.
WHAT!??

i think america is awesome! but americans (particually the steryotyped ones) can be kinda annoying.... but i've met and talk to a fair few americans and find them to be lovely, but im a very accepting and open minded person....... dont be put off by us brits, we're harmless really lol x
