yes Cardiff sounds excellent from what I've read. Still more inclined to England though.
    Why?

'The College of Law' in London would be ideal for you. My sister's currently there on a law conversion course having originally done a degree in Geography, she likes it there, she finds it hard work though nevertheless. I also know it's good because my step-dad went there to study law and is now a partner in his firm - so they teach you all the right stuff! Haha

A law conversion course and an actual law degree are completely different. I don't even know if a Canadian degree can be converted via the GDL. I think it has to be a UK degree only. Plus the GDL is only for England and Wales, not Canada.

ya I don't have any interest in this as I won't have a law degree coming to England. Just a BA.

As for Cardiff, like I said just from what I've read. But honestly I'm open to mostly anywhere in the England and Wales.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the responses. I have a pretty good idea which schools I'll be taking a look at.

The fact that you're an international and onto your second degree (mature student?) means you will interest quite a few of the top institutions. I don't really understand your grades but are they quite bad? If they are average then I would perhaps apply to at least 2 top schools.

I would agree with this. If you 'technically' meet the requirements for Manchester, then I'm sure you'd meet the requirements for UCL/Warwick and Bristol, since these are the same as Manchester/Leicester/Newcastle..well in the UK at least.

I'm not sure if I would qualify as a mature student, but yes I would be on to my second degree. Although, my first degree won't be done while I'm applying, it will be done that same year though.

My grades are borderline below average. 2.7 which is what mine is hovering around is a B- at my school. Without all of the useless science courses that I completely screwed up, it would be around 3.2 which is a B+ Pehraps these schools would look at my transcripts and realize that I'm actually quite a good student in the field that I'm actually studying.

Which top schools should I give a shot? As I've previously heard from other Canadians going to the UK with a degree, they seem to be pretty flexible with there marks.

Oxbridge both do 2 year courses if you want a crack at either of them.

Most websites don't even really have guidelines for university students in terms of what kind of grades they are looking for. This has made it difficult to figure out if I should be aiming high or just the tier below which I have been looking at.

Unis for grads won't necessarily just translate the A level equivalent though, which has a ceiling of AAA or A*AA,or at least seems to be whilst they see what they think of A*s. They can ask for a First, a 2:1 or a 2:2 and there are far fewer students with a First than sixth formers with AAA.

Email them and ask, as people have said as a (highly profitable) international student you are sought after. Your decision might be as much influenced by the workload, if you did get an offer from Oxbridge do you think you could cope with the intense workload they have?

There's a guy on here called JJarvis who does the 2 yr at Cambridge and he might be able to help you with what sort requirements the different unis have of second degree students.

Yes, I'll probably send out some emails seems like the best way to go about it.

Is there anyone else that can draw on their experience to help out here? It would be a pleasant surprise if I could aim higher in terms of the schools I am looking at.

Just have a dig through the subject specific webpages and find some contacts to email, head of school or school admissions. Might as well at least ask what their requirements are and see what they say, never know.

Yeah, as I say beware of the workload at somewhere like Oxbridge, it's tough and they regularly reject lots and lots of stellar applicants for British undergrad so consider whether you could hang with them (I know a couple of people there and honestly I don't know if I could do it). Also, I think the better the uni the more it will cost you, which is something to bear in mind (unless you could go for the Rhodes or something similar).

No one else on here that I know of, just email and find out you've nothing to lose.

Yup, I'm well informed on this. I also participate in some canadian forums with people who have gone through the same thing. For coming back to Canada we need to do 5-7 exams and then find an articling position which can be difficult. But England really is my first choice as I'm not sure if I want to return to Canada and I'm looking to move to England or somewhere else abroad.
honestly, your prospects are much better if you go to canadian law school, immigration here is tough. i have some canadian friends who came here and it's hard: you're an immigrant, you do an UNDERGRADUATE degree (whereas in north america its grad) and you get little respect/recognition when u go back.

Re: Canadian looking for opinion on UK law schools
I decided to revisit this thread now because I'm going into my last year here in Canada and applications are now open for UK law schools for 2013-14. I picked up a book just to familiarize myself with the LNAT, I'm not sure if I am going to go to one of the LNAT schools, but I'll decide soon enough if one of them will be in my five. Does anyone else with an undergraduate degree have experience with the application process? I'm really favouring the 2 year program so I can complete a degree as quickly as possible. I would really like to go to a school in London, but I am open to any. Opinions on schools would be greatly appreciated along with the cities they are located in, as I have never been to the UK before. Also, I will be an EU citizen by the time I'm in England which should make things a bit easier. Thanks guys.

    Hey!

I'm a Canadian, been living in the UK for the past 8yrs and applying to Law School for 2013-2014.

Personally I haven't chosen my top 5 just yet. I know I'm hoping to move back to Canada though and I know Uni of Leicester has a Canadian Law Society that would be great to join and they help with getting Canadians back over there to study/practice Law.

I know I'm definitely applying to Northumbria (as a safe option), Manchester, Leeds and then I'm getting a bit stuck. I LOVE the look of Durham however I think my chances would be slim and I like the look of Warwick - from what I can gather though both Universities are in very small areas so if you're looking for a city I'd avoid both. Both Manchester & Durham are LNAT schools.

Manchester - big city. Northumbria - in Newcastle, another big city, as is Leeds. You're from Toronto/Montreal so if that's what you're comfortable with I'd stick with those types of areas. The last thing you want is to be miserable for 3yrs studying. I know Nottingham is also a decently sized city too.

I couldn't tell you much about London personally - not even looking at schools in London myself, but I'm sure others here will definitely be able to guide you on those. If you have any questions though, feel free to PM me as it's a big culture shock moving here (in my opinion) from Canada.

Since you will already have a degree, and are looking at the 2 year options (which in my opinion is an extremely wise choice), why not look at the 2 yr MA programs? You apply directly to each university and do not worry about UCAS...

This is what I did... there are currently three (3) MA in Law programs: Sheffield, Surrey and Bristol (where I matriculated). It is an accelerated law degree, so instead of taking three (3) years to complete, you take two (2), and instead of an LLB you attain a Masters degree.

If interested in this option here are some links:

    http://www.shef.ac.uk/law/prospectiv...ogrammes/malaw
    http://www.bristol.ac.uk/law/pgdegre...dy/ma-law.html

Strangely the MA in Law at Surrey is not running at this time.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick reply and your opinions on university there. Im definitely looking for a little bit bigger of a city. I've only ever lived in big cities and at this point in my life I dont think im up for a change. Right now im looking at some London uni's, along with Leicester, mancester. Leicester I hear there are many Canadians and that could be beneficial to me, but im not necessarily looking at going somewhere with familiar people. I want to branch out.
