I have two career path options available right now and I can't decide what to do.

What I have always wanted to do is study chemical engineering at uni and then become a chemical engineer. But now my mum knows somebody who can get me an apprenticeship for definite in marine engineering. I declined the offer to be a marine engineer and everyone I speak to about it think I've made a stupid decision.

If I were to take on the marine engineering apprenticeship I would go to college for 6 months and then work on boats for 2 and a half years. Then after that I would go to university with more money and do my chemical engineering degree.
The only thing I dislike is that I will need to go back into education after being out of it for 3 years and I really don't want to be working as a marine engineer for the rest of my life. Am I being stupid for turning down an offer where I get to travel the world, get money and work experience ? And do you think the outcome of my life would be better if I do what I want to do or if I take on the apprenticeship?
