This is really random an irrelevant, and I will probably get some stick posting on this thread but...

I have always liked the idea of being a nurse, however my parents are really pushy and say stuff like, if you want to go into that area then why not study medicine.

Anyway now I am opting to study biology/biomedical science. Do you every worry that it is too vocational, what if you change your mind. I am on target to get around AAB. What do you need to get onto a nursing course.

I am sorry this is a bit out of place but I don't know where else to ask.

    thank you and sorry

What's random and irrelevant? This thread? How have you measure its irrelevance, by the way?

No, I don't worry that it is too vocational. I wonder, yes, at times, whether I would prefer to do something more in depth. I mean, academically. That being said, I hope to specialise. I am not in Uni yet, but I definitely will want to specialise and then I am sure I will achieve the depth I strive for.

Your parents are probably two of those people that think that a nurse is all about cleaning bottoms. Perhaps you could try to educate them?

Experienced nurses are as good as doctors, and nowadays as almost as much responsability as doctors. It's unfair that they earn so much less.

And you will still come out with a degree if you change your mind later but have the advantage of communication and many other skills.

With regards to grades, these vary depending on the uni. Southampton want ABB for Dual award or BBB for Child/Adult/MH. But it's not all about grades, it's also showing that you have a full understanding of the profession and work. You'll need experience where you can show relevant skills, pref in a health/caring environment.

There is certainly an academic side to the course, the anatomy and physiology is at degree level plus you'll also cover other aspects such as psychology and sociology. It's certainly not a breeze when you have to study as well as work long hours on placement. But I love it!

I am currently a 2nd year nursing student and it completly depends what kind of career you want to whether you want to be a nurse....yes you have to wipe bums/cope with copious amounts of blood/puke/other bodily fluids but you have to expect that....being a doctor is a completly different role....nurses treat/care and have 95% patient contact that they recieve....doctors diagnose and basically tell nurses what treatment should be given....which 99% the nurses already have very good idea as been/seen/done it.....the junior drs especially relie on the nurses for patient experience....so basically depends the job role you want whether you want to have minimal or maximum patient contact and whether you want to see a patient as just that or an individual that has a medical requirement but also a very individual need to fulfill it if that makes sense....only you know what you will be good at
