Oh right

Do you enjoy doing the IB? Do you get time to socialise?

I wouldn't say I enjoy it, unless you enjoy learning and doing work. I do get to socialise, but you need to find people in the IB who are willing to socialise  ! Well, in my case, socializing is going out once on the weekend haha...
With the IB, you have to know your strong points though. Pick the subjects you think you will enjoy or you know you're good at. Ask students taking the IB at your school right now about it and I'm sure they'll give you some non-trollish advice :P .
One thing you should be prepared to miss though is sleep. :frown:

I'm going to a different Sixth Form to do it... I've picked my weaker subjects as Standard (Maths Studies - hence Studies -, Biology, and German) and my strongest as Higher (History, Spanish, English Literature). I enjoy doing work, but I also like to socialise and relax now and then... Although I feel it may be possible for the IB, I'm still somewhat worried that I might be working all the time. Do you live in Canada, as your flag suggests?

(I live in the UK, by the way - the DPRK flag is because I'm the DPRK MUN Rep on here )

Ah, well as long as meeting new people isn't too much of a problem, I wouldn't be scared. Well Maths Studies may hinder you in some courses for university, but I don't think it's too much of a problem for the Arts and Social Sciences. I'm taking Biology SL right now, and as long as you don't have a teacher that teaches you the HL stuff - like mine :P - you'll be fine! Just remember Biology has a lot of memorizing, but SL isn't too bad imo. You won't be working all the time, or at least you won't feel like it. Considering you took your strengths as your HL I think you'd enjoy it and will find time to relax. The truth is, most of the IB students spend most of their time not studying and doing homework - except for exam time. Take myself for example, my HL's are English, Geography and Psychology. People say I'm naturally talented at the Group 2 subjects. I don't ever really revise or do homework for Psychology and Geography, and I'm getting easy 7's (top mark for Geo). Although when it comes to Biology, I can study for as long as I want and still only achieve a 5 :frown:. However, your higher levels are all very time consuming. All three require you to write extensive essays.

Edit: I forgot to say yes I do live in Canada. Also, are you going to CAIMUN (Canadian International Model United Nations)?!

i did the IB back in 2006! Glad those days were over! i just remember revision period was THE WORST. i basically only studied for maths methods and Physics HL, since i was real worried i could fail those. but the rest Art HL, German HL, English A1, ITGS HL....i didnt study one bit for! English was mainly all off sparknotes (dont know if that still exists), but yeh I always enjoyed art, and i had all my work done for it, so it was just pinning up which was stressful.

But seriously, if u study, youre going to pass. most importantly READ the questions PROPERLY. If it says discuss, then discuss. If it says describe, then describe. dont just assume you know what the question is asking just cos u read the first 3 words.

Also, NEVER EVER EVVEEEEEEER LEAVE AN EXAM EARLY. thats like the kiss of death. even if you have a whole hour to spare. JUST SIT THERE. you never know! once youre out the dorr, there is no going back. There were many times when i finished early, and i would just sit there, and the amount of times i noticed a mistake right at the end, or i realised i answered something wrong, or i finally found out how to do a maths question that i previously left blank!

Never leave the room. a lot of people in my school used to do that, cos it made them look cool leaving early. And it made the ones in still in the room more nervous. but in the end a lot of the ones who left early didnt end up getting the grades they should have. so stay put.

Well I'd like to do History (hopefully in Cambridge, which is my dream), so Maths Studies shouldn't be a problem as far as I know.

I don't really mind having to write essays; sure it's a pain, but I love writing and I'll need some good sample work for Cambridge and other universities, so I suppose that it won't be too bad.

Nope, sorry

Well it's been doing it for over a decade, and gets very good results, so I don't know really

Just outta interest, where are you? PM me if you don't wanna say publicly...

It's just cos I think I may be at the same school :P

Don't do Math Studies. Whatever you do, don't do it. Even if you're weak at math, do standard level!!

SL Bio and HL Bio have huge differences. Although I'm not taking it, out of 300 students in my grade, I believe 250 students took HL Bio/HL History Combo (aka, the easiest marks in our school since the mean is a 7 for History, and 6 for HL Bio). And like 20 students took SL Bio, and the differences are massive. SL Bio doesn't look at a bunch of topics.

No don't do SL. If you're weak at Math, do studies, if you're not doing maths related courses at uni. HELL even Maths Studies can get you into a medicine course. Dont put yourself through the extra work?

Woahh, massive influx of posts since I was last here! Makes me as an IB-er feel popular! :colondollar:

I have my art Viva (the real thing!) tomorrow with an external examiner going in - bit nervous for that! PLUS, all of my CAS diaries and handbook etc are due in too! So I've been having a bit of a crazy evening...

Our IAs were all done really late - as in, later than they should have been this year - but my psychology SL IA was edited at least 21256398231 times...it was ridiculous, our teacher is a bit of a perfectionist.

My little class is going a bit mad at the moment, seeing as we have exactly 2 weeks and 2 days until we start...surprisingly, I'm quite calm, but have a feeling I will start to freak out progressively in the next few days!

How is everyone getting on with revision? :s-smilie:

Near the end of the first year for me. I have SL Economics and French in May. I believe the people in the Southern Hemisphere have their exams in november.

In any case, FRENCH IS IMPOSSIBLE. I'm trying my hardest to learn it. I swear I'm just gonna spend my freaking 2 months memorizing the proverbs (May 22nd is the french SL exam D: ) and practicing grammar.

Economics shouldn't be as difficult but I won't get cocky. And while doing this, I still have to concentrate on HL math and HL English because these are the only two courses which need our 1st year marks for our predicted D:

And I have to start the EE D:

I'm not sure why you're doing French early. Your French just builds and builds so it's probably best to do it at the end of the two years. Economics, perhaps. Something like biology is probably best to take early as it requires memorisation rather than exam technique / essay writing skills. Good luck anyway!

I'm bricking myself for these exams. My HL French is good, as is my HL Economics and SL Maths, and I think I have a slim chance of a 7 in any of them, though I wouldn't count on it.
My HL Psychology revision is going dreadfully, and I'm having to translate my notes into French just so the information goes in. This is incredibly time consuming but it's slowly working!
The exam papers in Biology make me feel like this: WTGFKNDGKDFDFJ. I'm praying for a 5 now, after being predicted a 6!
And English is ehh, I could well get a 5 but a 6 would be nice.

IA grades before moderation, according to 2010 grade boundaries:
SL English - 7
SL Maths - 7
HL French - 6
HL Economics - 7
HL Psychology - 7
SL Biology - 6
EE Prediction - A
TOK Prediction - C
^ I'm also hoping these don't change too much as I'm very pleased with them! My EE and Maths were somewhat unconventional so I'm not sure how they'll be marked / moderated.

In summary: I can get the 34 points I need, but I still have reason to be worried.

Is it possible to get into top Universities to do a History degree (I'm thinking Cambridge, which I absolutely loved when I visited it) with Maths Studies? I'm not that good at maths, and generally want to focus on getting the best possible grades and then to get into Camrbidge (my subjects are: Higher - History, Spanish, and English Literature; Standard - Maths Studies/Maths, German, and Biology).

Yes of course. No one I know who applied for history had anything higher than Studies. Trust me, they DO NOT CARE. Just get a 7 or 6 in maths studies as opposed to a 5 or 4 in SL

:O I thought your teacher is only allowed to look at your IA once?

I find Studies easier than I found IGCSE.

I wouldn't exactly trust the post above, beacuse they may not have been accepted just because of that reason. Cambridge accepts the best of the best, and I know for a fact that their offers are usually higher than Oxfords - for law that is. Cambridge not only usually requires a 40 and above, but also it wouldn't hurt to have Math SL instead of Studies. Standard Level is A LOT better than Studies. I'm not sure if Standard Level is THAT much harder than Studies, but it is a lot easier than HL. I'm taking Standard Level, and it's honestly not that hard - for me that is. The class average is about a solid 5, and we do about half of the topics that the HL's do. In addition, the topics that we do cover are much briefer than the HL topics - even briefer than the provincial curriculum here.

I would recommend you take SL unless you had anything lower than a B in your Maths GCSEs. In which case you shouldn't aspire for Cambdige too much... :/

Dear lord. Standard is a LOT harder than Studies. I started off in SL and dropped because 1) it was too hard and 2) because I don't need it. Honestly. My school has a really high oxbridge success rate and the majority of people I know who applied for Cambridge for an Arts course HAD MATHS STUDIES. SL is designed for people who want to go into a science/maths related degree such as Biology or Chemistry or Economics (dependent on the uni) Medicine only requires studies. Why put yourself through extra NEEDLESS work. Please don't listen to this Studies bigot.
Well, I started something like a week ago! I have three languages (Italian A1, English B and Spanish B) and I'm pretty good at languages, meaning that I don't have to study that much... but gooosshhh I never opened a book for Geography (still managed to get 6 predicted just by using common sense) and I really need to study for Biology HL and Math!

Hi! I was wondering if anyone took Bio SL?
I'm taking Bio SL right now in a mixed HL and SL class. As there are only 3 SL students, the teacher has decided to just teach the HL course to us. From the SL and HL outlines, I find there are many differences, thus I was wondering if there is a difference between SL and HL in each individual unit, or just the Plant life unit.

Thanks

Ok, I take Biology HL but I can tell you the list of topics you need to study for SL

1. Statistical Analysis
2. Cells
3. The chemistry of life
4. Geonetics I
5. Communities and Ecosystems
6. Human health and physiology I

plus 2 options
First exam in 13 days! :woo:
So unprepared :frown:
And yet I'm still on TSR.
I feel like all the revision I've done is for classics because it's my first exam, but I've got 8 exams in the first week and I need to revise for those ones as well but I'm not finished with classics yet! :frown:
Aaaaaaargh.
I'm just telling myself... just 31 days left... 31 days left and then it will all be over. Forever.

And then I find out I failed and need to retake in November :O D: please no...
I saw someone post on the facebook IB memes page that she's worried because she hasn't started revising reproduction for biology yet??!!

I'm like... I haven't started revising biology yet full stop!! It's my last exam so I'm revising it last!
Omg it feels like everyone else has done so much more work than me.
