    Books to Avoid
Do not go near "Temple" by Matthew Reilly...
    it is utter drivel
    On the back it says
"Some doors are meant to remain unopened"...
the same applies to this book

    Anything by Dan Brown
    Anything by Clive Cussler
"13, Rue Therese" by Elena Mauli Shapiro
Just simply awful books, all of them; how Dan Brown has sold the number of books he has amazes me.

    Nice idea for a thread!

I'm not a compulsive book-finisher so if I dislike a book I will just stop reading it - this means I can't remember the names of any really bad books I've read as I've stopped after a couple of chapters.

The Selfish gene.. urgh, I'm sure the entire book could easily be summarised in two pages. I didn't really enjoy it and couldn't wait to put it down, which is a shame because a lot of the concepts and theories discussed are very interesting, but he just goes on and on rambling.

Middlemarch- it makes Pride and Prejudice seem fast-paced and exciting.

In fact, it is Pride and Prejudice- except that nothing happens. For 700 pages.

Pillars of the Earth is also very poorly written. But the storyline is gripping so I'm not sure where I stand on it...

Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf - Nothing short of mind-numbing.

i feel morally obliged to finish a book once i have read the first chapter... until now.
This piece of rubbish requires you to believe that

i)the Incas made an idol with special powers from a "thyrium" meteorite

ii)german terrorists have stolen the key text for finding this idol from a monastery... killing all the monks of course

iii)fortunately a partial copy in Latin survived to be translated by mild-mannered expert William Race

iv)the idol is needed by the USA to produce the ultimate planet destroying weapon

v)the idol is guarded by giant jaguars which have been living in a cave for hundreds of years....

sorry life is too precious to continue

Any book that is turned into a movie - why waste dozens of hours reading them when you can watch them in a 2-hour movie?

    The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

Just so boring. I can't believe I actually forced myself to finish it.

I'll give you that one, the movie is ****. Focuses too much on the depressing events that take place without paying attention to the relationship of Father and son.

    Atlas shrugged.
The whole thing is like a massively over long polemical fairystory full of unbelievable, simplistic characters. Also terrible dialogue and sex scenes.
You should openly snigger at anyone recommending this book imo.

Ulysses by James Joyce. I had to read it for university, and even with multiple guidebooks I couldn't make head or tail of it. Perhaps if I'd spent longer puzzling it out I would have got more from it, but if you just want a decent book to read I'd suggest that you steer well clear.
