    Hong Kong Living
    Hello All,

In the case my expenses are not covered (I'm pretty sure they will be) I thought I better have some idea of accomadation costs etc in HK.

I am going to HK for 3 months next year and was wondering if 36, 000 HKD would be suffiecent for accomadation for the 3 months? I want to be around central/happey valley area

I will also have around 12, 500 HKD per month to spend on food and clothes etc. again, is this enough?

    Many Thanks

    As a local,
I think 12500 per month is fair enough in Hong Kong,
as long as u don't buy imported luxurious products
However, frankly, it's a bit difficult to find an accommodation for such a small budget in
central/ happy valley area, as they are posh area,
I recommend u to look further out of the city, along the blue tube line
the suburbs a bit out of town could give u a vast variety of choices.

Assuming an exchange rate of HK$12.5~£1, accommodation is the most expensive thing in Hong Kong.

Since you choose to live in Central (the business district) or Happy Valley (only 10 mins by MTR to Causeway Bay, followed by a short walk), both places are not going t be cheap.

Central would easily set you back £2000 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. Happy Valley a little cheaper.

Drop me a line if you want more info as well as what to do in HK, if it's your first time there.

    Hi mate,

Yep I understand - accomadation is v expensive in HK. I do not know HK very well at all! So could you
reccommend places to look at to live etc? My office is on Wyndham street, so don't want to be too far away.

Also any shops/bars/places to eat etc.. you could reccomend? Also would it be worth looking to live in Kowloon? How longs the journey to Central roughly?

    Cheers

    Sent you some stuff.

Living in Kowloon (KL) and working in Central? Depends where in KL!

You ever been to HK? If not, you'll be amazed by the efficiency of their transport system. There are loads of modes of transport (prob most in the world) and the all "gel".

If you were to live in KL, which is cheaper, you might actually want to go as far a the New Territories (NT) as there's more space and cheaper.

I knew people living in Lantau (a separate island where the airport is situated) and travel in to Central by ferry or MTR.

Say you lived in Tai Wai (NT). By MTR to Central (think you need to change once), it shouldn't take more than 30 mins.

This place is in Wellington Street, about 1 minute's walk from Wyndham Street:

    http://www.yungkee.com.hk/

The first few pages of the menu show the awards they've won! Bear in mind, they're not the best in HK! The best restaurants tend to be in the super hotels, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Grang Hyatt (all in HK), Ritz-Carlton, Intercontinental, The Pen (in KL).

For "normal" food, the place oppoite Yung Kee is good, Wong Chi Gei. Tsui Wah is meant to be recommended but I didn't like it.

You can even get a bowl of noodles for HK$18 at Tsim Chai Gei, also on Wellington Street.

Enough for now, don't want to bore others. Drop me a line for more info.

Doesn't the company you will be working for provide you with any assistance with regard to relocation?

Try dropping them a line see if they could help you out.

Either way at that kind of budget it's going to be hard finding a place to live in the areas you mentioned especially if you're thinking of living on your own. Flat shares.... there are several expat forums, try asking on one of those see if anyone might have a spare room they are willing to rent out short term... is quite rare to find people with excess capacity in their homes though as rental is very expensive in HK and people generally live in tiny pigeon holes

The other issue is since it is only 3 months, you might have problems finding something as most will require a 12 month lease.

Yeh tbh..I'm hoping all this is cared for by the company, I was just having a mull over things if accomadation wasn't covered. Should find out next week or so but this has given me a good insight into costs.

I got a few friends in HK - maybe they'll put me up for free! haha

If you want REALLY cheap accommodation in HK, check out Chungking Mansions.

It's featured in the film Chungking Express.

I want to visit them. I looked at a youtube video though, they don't look as appealing as in the movie :ahee:

I personally wouldn't but in the travel guide featuring Sam Brown, it doesn't look THAT bad!

    How did you find HK?

Im not too sure on how much a decent accommodation would set you back though I assume if you were to live near central it would cost quite a bit. $36000 might not be sufficient enough for 3 months. Though the $12000 would let you live a comfortable lifestyle. When I went back for two weeks I spent roughly $3000

I was there a few years and was paying about £1000 for a one bed flat.

Nowadays, everything's shot up so I'm afraid you'd have to share.

Check out Shama, Domus and a few other chains.

Area? Type of high end? Type of crowd you are hoping?

Remember their high end would probably snub their nose at you if you aren't all that high end
