Re: How far would you commute to uni?I won't lie... I do miss out on the night life and it would be pretty cool to stay out a bit later. That said, I've never really been into clubbing so I haven't felt cheated in that sense.(Original post by GiveMeAChallenge)
This is very similar to what i was thinking of doing! going to sheffield uni from where i live is.40 mins by car but i dont know about train! Do you feel you miss out on socialising and nightlife or are you not the partying type? How about making friends?
What I will say is when I was making the big decision between moving there or staying at home, many people told me how I wouldn't make many friends at uni. For me this certainly has NOT been the case! Yes I miss out on nightlife but I do make an effort to meet up with people in the daytime between the classes. On Tuesdays we have a huge gap between so we normally go and grab a drink and a bite to eat
To be honest I was surprised by just how many people commute to Hudd! I got the feeling that it would just be me lol

Re: How far would you commute to uni?
When I start uni in September I'll be commuting. It'll take approximately 45 minutes each way (10 mins on bus to train station, 20 mins on train then 15 minute walk from station to uni.)

I would rather do that than pay around £3000 for accommodation! I'm hoping that I won't miss out much on nightlife because myself and many people in Renfrewshire (where I'm from) go to Glasgow anyway for their nights out and just get a taxi or the last train home.

I only went from Oxford to London but door to door it took 2 and a half hours each way. I left 3 to make sure!
Wow...
I'll count my lucky stars I don't live near London -
Re: How far would you commute to uni?Yeah i think more people commute than you think! I was expecting responses like 'why would you want to stay at home?'(Original post by Baula)

Do people stay over at someones hall if they finish clubbing at early hours? -
Re: How far would you commute to uni?I imagine it'd be ok. I'm in second year so my friends aren't in halls anymore but they often let me crash on the sofa at their house if we've been out somewhere(Original post by GiveMeAChallenge)

Re: How far would you commute to uni?
Personally I wouldn't want to commute anywhere for undergrad and I wouldn't let my parents make me stay at home. In my gap year I commuted about an hour each way to work and that was tiring enough- I'd come home so hungry and exhausted that all I could do would be collapse! The last thing I wanted was another year of it being 6'oclock and still having to make a long journey home. Also for the price I've paid halls have been so worth it- a room right next to my lecture theatre buildings and the chance to live independantly which I'll probally not be able to afford to do for a while after uni. My house for 2nd year is a 15 mins walk away and I'm dreading that! If I do postgrad I'll have to commute for that, I don't want to commute for more than 35 mins though (the time it takes from my house to UCL)

Re: How far would you commute to uni?i dont think it affects your social life coz i still made friends with people who live on campus(Original post by GiveMeAChallenge)
I'm surprised how many people actually commute from home!! I don't feel so bad now
How do you all find it? Does it affect your social life?
plus if you go out you can always crash at their house

Re: How far would you commute to uni?
I commute an hour each way at the moment, but I'm only in 2 days a week so it seemed silly to pay for accommodation when I could stay at home and just get the train there. The train takes 20 minutes and then a half hour walk at the other end, and a bit of a walk at the beginning as well. Done that for the past year, and stay at my boyfriend's the nights before I go in because he lives right next to the station.
Last year I commuted from home, which isn't too much further away but took two hours because the transport links are rubbish, and that got to me a bit as I was in 4 days a week.. I probably wouldn't do that again, although I am glad now that I have 3 thousand less debt because of it. -
Re: How far would you commute to uni?
I commute 50km to uni, and it takes 2-3 hours. Part driving to the train station, part train, part tram. Then there's the waiting time for each thing as well as walking in between. I live the furthest away of anyone I know, so a lot of the time if we go out, my friends will offer for me to stay with them overnight. My only problem is in winter when i'm waking up before its light and getting home when it's dark.
How do you all find it? Does it affect your social life?
