What ever happened to good TV?
Today's TV sucks. It all seems to be the same stuff copied over and over on a 1000 channels: innumerable stupid reality shows, the spin-offs of stupid reality shows, constant repeats from old chat shows, copied show formats (take me out/ love machine), great dramas are few and far between and some get spoilt when they don't know when to stop! (e.g. Homeland just got recommissioned for a second season. Just what are they planning on dragging out?!) - even kids TV blows! There is nothing like SM:TV or Live and Kicking anymore. What do all those pre-tweens doing with their Saturday mornings?!

surely the drop in overall quality can't be blamed on the internet? What do you all think is missing from today's TV?

I'd say the amount of good tv has stayed pretty consistent......it's just the amount of **** has risen dramatically.

British tv is mostly crappy. But American tv is thriving atm. So many good shows on atm which are getting great critics. Mad Men, Community, Breaking Bad, Parks and Rec, Californication etc. Breaking Bad is one of the greatest tv shows ever made too.

There is some good tv out there but when you go to watch it, such as Mad Men on Sky, you end up having to plough through 5 mins or more of ads. With good shows they either over do them or cut them - like arrested development. Plus, the UK tends to be behind when some shows are airing so you already know the plotline/seen clips.

I probably should have stressed british TV is what i have the biggest issue with. There is loads of comedy about but it either really over does the 'street' thing like phoneshop or is a bit ott on being middle-class, like outnumbered sometimes.

There's a simple solution: stop watching the television, and start downloading/streaming all your shows. You get to choose what you watch and when you watch it, and you don't have any adverts to contend with.

Homeland's awesome though. Judging by the writing of the first season, I think it's safe to say that it won't simply become 24 2.0.

Game of Thrones trumps all declarations of bad TV.

As for Mad Men, I was surprised to hear that for all the raving about it, the viewing figures are absolutely minute. Less than 50,000 - that's about the number of people that watch Pawn Stars or American Restoration on Discovery Channel.

On Homeland - can someone tell me when Clare Danes turned into Katee Sackhoff??

This year isn't as good as previous years, though.

I do agree. Nobody stands out this year, although that albino guy really annoys me. Maybe this series' villain?

I'm still lamenting the loss of daringly innovative comedy such as Jam and Brass Eye

There's good TV if you look hard enough/at the right time. But I agree there this an overwhelming amount of crap, scrolling the TV guide is depressing sometimes.

Thoroughly recommend Game of Thrones to anyone who likes that kinda thing. The Walking Dead is pretty good too.

I find more to watch now than I ever have. There are good programmes out there, there's just more rubbish filling them out.

I use a Tivo to get more or less the same results. Plus I download a fair bit.
