Getting to Essex (Colchester) from the West Midlands
Is there any information that you can provide about getting there on public transport? I am visiting on the 25th, and just trying to organise how to get there. At the moment it looks like going the day before, and staying overnight somewhere.

Are there any (CHEAP!) hotels, hostels,B&Bs that you recommend that I could stay at?

Is my only option, if going by train, to go to London Euston and from there to Colchester?

    Sorry about all the questions!

    1. Usually the Uni (if you're on an official visit) provide bus transport, but that may only be from airports. Your best bet is, like you said, to go down to London, across to Liverpool Street, and then there is usually a fast train to Norwich stopping at only Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich that will get you here.

    2. To be honest, there's not that many cheap places around here that I know of. But as I live here, I haven't had much need to get a hotel. Booking at places like Premier Inn and stuff in advance is usually cheap (when I went to Norwich I booked 2 months in advance for £15). There is a hotel dead in the centre of town (Red Lion) but is ludicrously pricey (but very convenient).

    3. When you get to Colchester, you'll arrive at North Station - which is different to Town Station. There are numerous options from here. There is a direct bus to the University (the 61/62) from just outside the station. The 61 takes slightly longer, but may actually be better for you as it goes around town, to the Quays accommodation and to the Uni, where as the 62 is a lot more direct. But I imagine you'll want to go to your hotel first. Either way, the 61/62 or 62A (you can also take the 75/76 but I don't recommend) will get you to the Uni, and they run between North Station and Wivenhoe Train Station.

Alternatively, you can get a train from either Station (Town/North) to Wivenhoe and get a bus from there, which will give you a bit of a tour of the town of Wivenhoe, which is probably where you'll end up living in your 2nd year.
