How do you tell..? Is it really complicated?
If you're not sure, stick with getting a VGA cable. Only some laptops have HDMI ports, whilst nearly all have VGA. If you have a desktop computer at home, look at the back of that: the cable connecting the computer to the monitor is the VGA cable. Unplug it from the back of the monitor, and see if there's a port on your laptop it fits.

The OP has a Macbook, which has a Mini DVI port, so it all depends on what TV the OP has. It's pointless just getting a VGA cable because you can't plug a VGA cable straight in to the OP's laptop. Besides many modern laptops only come with HDMI ports

Some TV's also only come with HDMI ports. I know mine does, so a VGA cable would be completely redundant if the OP does not have a VGA port on their TV

Bad advice. The computer could be connected by VGA, DVI or HDMI depending on the motherboard connections and the monitor in question
