Hi there! My friend is planning to study her bacholers degree in the UK. She is completely not sure which universities would be famous for her subject studies. She would like to specialise in Textile Design . She thought nottingham trent university would be famous for this major. Do you know any other better universities regarding her studies ?

About design, I think that location would be quite important as well. London has a vareity of museum to visit, which will give her good benefits to study near direction.

I hope anyone would recomend her the best universities.

    Thanks a lot.

I know nothing about textile design, so I can't really help on that front. One bit of warning about london though, yes it might be a fantastic city with lots of things to visit, but the living costs there are significantly higher than anywhere else in the country.
I'll have a quick google, see if I can find any sort of comparison for universities in that subject.

    step 1. go to google.com
step 2. type in university leagues tables.
    step 3. choose your subject.

If all else fails, google: russel group universities.

I'm moving this to Creative Arts. General University is for non-course/uni specific discussion and, as Textile Design is particularly specialist, a better reply will be found in Creative Arts which is the most suitable subforum.

Except there aren't subject tables for textile design specifically, I don't think, nor is the Russell group an exhaustive list of "good" or even "the best" universities in the UK, particularly for textile design, which few, if any, Russell Group universities teach. It's often taught at art colleges, former polytechnics, and some others like Dundee. The only Russell Group university I know of who do teach textile design is Southampton (through the Winchester College of Art) and, even then, it's a Joint Honours Degree. Oh, and there's Manchester too I think, though many of the leading universities for textile design will be from outside the Russell and 1994 Groups.

about this i think independent research will be very important. however if you want to be in london, i think UAL would be a good choice as the university specialises in the art & design field - it has different campuses specialising in certain aspects of this subject in their own way: Camberwell, Wimbledon, Chelsea, LCC, St. Martins.

as for university rankings, i feel that it is EXTREMELY unreliable to use for picking which university to use. 1 of the main reasons which is pretty ridiculous is because it focuses far FAR too much on oxbridge n russel group universities. for example: Oxford/UCL ranking top of the guardian's uni league table when their university ONLY offers Fine Art.

personally i think you should search for these uni courses through ucas and go through their degree shows to see the work they do to compare with ones you want to go to.

in addition i think it would be useful to research universities through New Designers Show- top students for particular design fields are picked to be able to place their work in this exhibition.

enough talking, more research!! hope this helps though i dont know if it makes sense

Not sure about textile design but Goldsmiths is pretty well known for the arts. There are also little known courses that may be excellent. I would advise your friend to go through UCAS as it can give her a list of all of the institutions that have a textiles program.

The link is to a UCAS course search for Textile Design applying from an EU country (containing location, qualification, institution, campus, study mode, duration and fees:

    http://coursefinder.ucas.com/CourseFinderWeb/result.htm

The second is the same information but from a country outside of the EU:

    http://coursefinder.ucas.com/CourseFinderWeb/result.htm

Unfortunately, the fees information on this page isn't clear but this can be solved by visiting the institutions website once a suitable course is found.

    Hope this helps.
