Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??"Do as I say, not as I do."(Original post by HarveyCanis)
You do realise OP, that EVERY single post you make on here is now going to be intensely analysed for any single grammar/spelling error? I give it until tomorrow when you'll be unmasked as a hypocrite.
- His Lord Jesus Christ -

As mentioned above to another poster: the multitude of question marks used at the end of such sentences was effected in order to convey emphasis and/or great outrage at the violation of Her Majesty's language. Please, do understand.(Original post by Captn)
Yeah, I hate it when people use more than one question mark in a row.

Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people spell the English language properly??There's a nice bit of comma splicing - excellent work. You also wrote 'no excuses' as a sentence which is technically incorrect because it doesn't contain a noun.(Original post by Snagprophet)
I can understand some more obscure words, I myself used to be unable to spell ridiculous on paper, but you're/your?
Jog on, lad. -
Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??!!. and ?.(Original post by Annie72)
Bad grammar annoys the hell out of me!!.
Maybe I should have been an English teacher?.
I am merely making a point :P -
Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people spell the English language properly??hahahahaha(Original post by Snagprophet)
What? It's is a contraction for 'it is'. I'm glad your foolishness allowed you to feel proud of yourself though, it's really sad when some people never get to experience this.

Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??I say a colon works, so I shall leave the quote as it is.(Original post by TurboCretin)
I took out the semicolon part because, on reflection, I'm unsure whether a colon would be accepable or a comma would be the only option.
Anyway, I think suicide might be unnecessary, I just wish he'd either shut up or adhere to his own standard.
Nah, if he's going to be that hardcore he should definitely follow through.
It's suicide, or buying a book on grammar, OP.Last edited by Piko_Piko; 14-04-2012 at 15:43. Reason: Erroneous comma! Oh the shame.. -
Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??Why are the exclamation marks and question mark followed by full stops? The second sentence isn't a question, so it should just be a full stop.(Original post by Annie72)

Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??This is a very utilitarian view. Yes, people will usually know what you mean - though not always - but the problem is not one of what your friends or random strangers will think. It is people you deal with in a professional capacity. If an inability to distinguish 'your' from 'you're' follows you into the world of work, you will not be taken seriously in any vocation which requires written correspondence, never mind drafting documents.(Original post by slylee)
You're all complete pricks, if someone says your the one or you're the one...unless you're stuck so far up your own arse, you will know what they meant.
It also loses you all credibility as an arbiter of linguistic 'correctness', which I think is the really funny thing about this thread.Last edited by TurboCretin; 14-04-2012 at 15:43. -

It is elementary, my dear chancellor:

Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??I did indeed deliberate upon this; however, after such deliberation, I finally decided that I did not want some posters to be confused and believe me to mean something of legal relevance or transport.(Original post by James82)
just to add to the errors already picked 'linguistic conveyance' would make more sense.
Nonetheless, it would indeed make more sense. However, it is in no way a grammatical or spelling error. -

Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??Goodness gracious, what have I done?!
A mighty onslaught of grammar Nazis has been effected!
Everywhere, I see them lurking in the shadows, waiting for the slightest grammatical error to be made.
By Jove, they even turn upon me - I, the one who led them into battle! -
Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??I'm pretty sure you can't use a non-finite verb in its present participle in place of a noun.(Original post by Sovr'gnChancellor£)
However, it is in no way a grammatical or spelling error. -

Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??Having deliberated on this at the time of writing the post and now with your additional assistance, I therefore have to agree with you. Indeed, you are correct. It was a tortious employment. I must now end my miserable existence. Goodbye.(Original post by TurboCretin)
You cannot effect a multitude of question marks. A multitude of question marks is not an action. You employ a multitude of question marks.
But, wait - no! Surely I must improve? Surely I must make amends for my wrongs? Surely there is a light beyond? Surely I can reconcile with my fellow grammar Nazis? It seems to me that I shall not end my being. No, I shall rather continue it. Off, shall the cloak of pessimism come. Away, shall the darkness be lifted. And on, shall the garment of positivity be put! For I, Grammar Fuhrer of the Grammar Nazis, shall once again come forth and sit in his rightful throne!Last edited by Sovr'gnChancellor£; 14-04-2012 at 16:00. -
Re: Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??You do know that there are many people worldwide who can use very accurate spelling and grammar so being able to do this is not limited to people of "Anglo-Saxon descent". It's not like people of Anglo-Saxon descent can automatically spell correctly when they are born and as they grow up, they begin to ignore this trait.(Original post by Sovr'gnChancellor£)
It is infuriating! Even many of those of pure Anglo-Saxon descent and citizens spell common words wrongly, so it is not limited to 'foreigners' or those of non-Anglo-Saxon descent!
For example, when somebody means "they're", they write/type "their"! It's shocking - many older teenagers are in error in this instance.
Another common one is "you're" and they write/type "your"! I mean - how can people who have been educated for years, spell these simple words wrongly in their late teens!
I cannot understand how you can spell "your" when you mean "you're"!! How can you do that???
EDIT:
I mean, would you rather all persons within the Isles all spoke German??!! This outrageous and incorrect grammar and spelling is insulting to all those great men who fought off the foreign enemies; who protected the Isles, the women, the children; who repelled the hostile Central Powers; who preserved freedom for the future! Show some respect!
Oh and in your title ("Spelling debacles - Why can't people use correct grammar/spell properly??"), couldn't you have bothered to have written "Spelling debacles- why can't people use correct grammar or spell properly??" It would've made more sense. -

You don't need to put full stops after exclamation marks or question marks...
(Original post by James82)
Why are the exclamation marks and question mark followed by full stops? The second sentence isn't a question, so it should just be a full stop.
Hehe.......:P
I see some of you are awake this afternoon and noticed my intended bad grammar. -
