Hi Guys,

I would really appreciate help on this. Right, so every time we ‘save’ something online, whether it’s a message or picture on Facebook or an email; our information is transferred and saved onto that specific server (literally saved on an industrial sized computer?). I am wondering; does the technology exist to save and access information, not from a physical server as such; instead, the information simply exist in the abyss/ atmosphere?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

No that makes no sense, information has to be encoded in some sort of physical thing, even if it's really small like atoms. In fact, that's all the universe is, really.

You could argue that volatile memory like DRAM is not "stored" on a server as such. It's denoted by a charge on a capacitor, so still requires hardware, but not the typical harddisk set up.

Of course, such storage is not permanent.

Technically it could be claimed that information is stored in the atmosphere when radio signals are sent. There is a very short period between the point it's been transmitted and it being recieved. However it's not long term storage (it's going to be measured in milli or micro seconds)

In terms of long term storage it's always on some physical device.
