    could you have put golgi for thge first 2 questions?
    I thought 1b said 'name two other components'.

    Hi guys,

    quick question about the test for a reducing sugar question..

    Add equal volume of sample being tested to benedict's reagant;
    place test tube in gently boiling water bath for 5 minutes;
    orange/brown solution indicates presence of reducing sugar

    Would that get me 3 marks?

    On the peptide bonds i started talking about being against the concentration gradient, stupid i know. will that get no marks?

    Your three marks will be for
    1/Benedicts Reagent
    2/Heat it
    3/Observed colour change of solution from blue to brick red if reducing sugar is present

    If you didn't say specifically blue to red then you may not get the mark.

    I also wrote some stuff about boil with HCl then add sodium hydrogen carbonate to test for non-reducing sugars but I'm sure I didn't need to.

    They get everyone's results and standardise them so there's no way to tell.

    i know, but do you think the grade boundaries will be high like in jan?

    It's really impossible to say, because it depends on how many people get which marks. People at my college generally thought it was quite easy. If I had to guess, I'd say they would be pretty high because there were a lot of easy marks.

    But surely not much of this would have happened at pH2, due to the enzyme being denatured?
    No, because pH doesn't denature enzymes, but what i wrote was that Ph breaks bonds in the tertiary structure of the enzyme thus enzyme-substrate complexes cannot be formed thus products are not formed therefore the solution doesn't change much (well i was totally wrong but eh)

    I think for the cyanide one it would expect you to talk about non-competitive inhibitor? As that is what cynaide does, it binds to the receptors prevent Na+ diffusing into the membrane thus the water potential doesn't lower and water doesn't move in? That is a bit from unit 4 though so I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure the fact no glucose will be produced for active transport won't get you any marks as what about faciliated diffusion?
    Anyone know what full UMS has been in the past? The whole point I resat this paper was for full UMS :/

    Wot? Think about it logically for a minute, why would they want you to talk about it being an inhibitor, when it clearly stated hat it affects respiration. From your knowledge, you shud know how sodium ions get int the cell, by active transport, what does active transport require? Energy, so no respiration = no anergy released = no active transport = no sodium ions are absorbed.

    You shud be able to take a suitable assumption that the cell has glucose already, why else does the other cell take in sodium, if the other cell had no glucose, the curve would remain the same without inhibitor, I'd you get what I'm sayin.

    100 UMS = 60/60 marks and I'm 99 percent sure.
