Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS Biology
Ok hey guys teachers have told me the following
Graph alcohol evaluate this conclusion etc
Yes decrease
After 3-4-5 increased risk
No control used so effects cannot be seen.
Correlation not causation et
Other named factor eg alcohol may affect people in different ways older people may respond to alcohol differently.
Yes dec
Respiration in the tissues question
Less respiration
Less atp produced
less substances moved against conc gradient
So less absorbed
7a) Facilitated diffusion
Channel protein water filled alow water soluble material, peptide not water soluble
Carrier proteins not specific to peptide so cant be taken up.
Diet
Salt = high bp
Cholestrol - antheroma
thrombosis
Saturated fat = more ldls
Higher risk of atheroma
oh and age question why similar ages used
More representative of the age group so results reliable. -
Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS BiologyNo, you can never get marked down, but if its not in the ms, it'll just be ignored.(Original post by Mr XcX)
On the diet question do you think I will get marked down for mentioning smoking

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS BiologyAre you sure? Like you you write something and what you wrote afterwards contradicts it I remember my teacher saying they'll mark you down. Also im pretty sure you write something down wrong AND right they have to penalize you.. I mean your taking 2 guesses for 1 question lol... like 5+5= 10 OR 11 lol if you get what I mean(Original post by iAre Teh Lejend)

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS Biology
As much as I'm tempted to, not going to look at any of the posts about the exams. I have other exams so going to worry about those first instead of dwelling on the past- but just writing this to say that I hope everyone found it okay and especially to the re-sitters like me I hope it went better than the first time.
Good luck with your results and BIO2.

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS BiologyI wish it was but this isn't really the case, summer exams generally have higher grade boundaries, at least for AQA Biology:(Original post by sconter)
summer grade boundries are lower.
June 2011 BIO1: A(45/60) - Jan 2011 BIO1: A(41/60)
June 2010: BIO1:A (45/60) - Jan 2010 BIO1: A (38/60)
It's probably due to the fact that June is the last chance saloon for AQ2 students to boost their grades, whilst AS students tend to focus more as the AS result is important for Uni applications in September, and not having Christmas get in the way also helps! Some have even speculated that winter exams are set to be harder by the exam boards to make more students retake them in the summer to increase their revenue, but who knows?!

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS Biology
Just to clarify on the cyanide question. I'm certain that the question asking about sodium said "Using information from the question and your own knowledge...". Nowhere in the question was it mentioned that cyanide was an inhibitor and I doubt the exam board expects students to know this as part of their "own knowledge" because it is not part of the specification.

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS Biologymy teacher said that a wrong point cancels out with a right point so for example, if they asked u for 2 points in an answer and u mention 3 and the last point is wrong, u will only get one mark for that question. The examiner cant choose to ignore a contradictory point. they only ignore when u've mentioned something irrelevant to the question.(Original post by Nucleo)

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS Biologyi did that as well..... somink about how are amino acids formed FROM protein(Original post by blueclearsky)
i remember putting condensation instead of hydrolysis for the amino acids/protein question for some reason :/ does anyone remember the exact wording of the question?

Re: AQA BIOL1 ~ 14 May 2012 ~ AS Biologybut cyanide is mentioned in the text book as an example of a competitive inhibitor although you're right we dont need to know this in particulat detail. it was also shown from the graph that it was inhibiting the uptake of sodium ions as the graph remained constant at a high level.(Original post by leeandrewarmstrong)
