What music do your friends sneer at?
    Hi! :hi:

    The scenario goes like this:

You're in your room, calmly listening to some music on headphones or speakers or whatever :music: be it :headbang: or :hippie: or even

A fellow of yours listens in on the music (which you believe to be of a remarkably high quality and, interesting for its many intellectual crevices that are only appreciated on listening with open ear and mind :smartass:)...

This 'fellow' makes some snotty, condescending remark with a detestably sneering face etched upon their..... their.... well their face :sly:

Cue. Rage at their comment :stomp:  :motz:

So tell us, what artists have been wrongly sneered at by your used-to-be-fellow? How wrong were they? How did you react?

Well my favourite band is Enter Shikari (hence the name I use on this site), and when I was listening to them sitting in my History class, the girl next to me grabbed my earphone and said 'thats not music thats just screaming'. My reaction was to tell her that it actually has a meaning behind it unlike what she was listening to. A few months later I met the lead singer of the band and got my picture with him whilst the girl got to meet Olly Murs. When she showed me the picture I was like 'oh did you get to speak to him?' and she started babbling on about how he was so funny and she was so lucky to meet somebody that famous. When I showed her the photo of me and Rou Renolds she was 'who is he? he isn't famous, he looks like he needs a bar of soap'. Grrrrrrr

Hahah this is exactly what I'm talking about!

    Fool: What is this?
    Me: Portishead
Fool: Just sounds like alien music to me..
    Me: Oh really?
Fool: I'll show you a good song.....
Me: ...Ed Sheeran. I see..

I'm really into folk/folk-indie, which my friends mistake for farmer music. JOHNNY FLYNN IS NOT A FARMER, HE IS A SHAKESPEARIAN ACTOR YOU IMBECILES.

I've also got a fair amount of heavyish punk rock on my phone (i.e. Bad Religion). When decrying some of my friends' most pitiful lyrics (die, bitch, die. suck my dick, bitch - very insightful), they challenged me to provide something better.
They hit shuffle on my phone, and it happened to be a Bad Religion song with a heavy intro; they assumed it was screamo and deplored my very existence. Such a bad day.

My friends don't sneer at any music. Same as I wouldn't sneer at something they were listening to if I didn't like it. Each to their own

Except once when I was listening to Enter Shikari and my housemate was like WTF is that?! Oh and once when I was listening to Crystal Castles and my boyfriend at the time was like: turn it off!! turn it off! it's hurting my ears! And he went to see them with me. And complained the whole way through

But apart from that no one ever says anything.

I enjoy sneering at my friend who listens to Coldplay... But other than that I don't let people in on my orgasmic tunes

Most of my friends just keep telling me that Florence and the Machine are ****. Yet they listen to things that just go with the flow, their music is nothing new or refreshing.

My friends don't really sneer at music I listen to and vice versa, but one did accuse me of making up band names when I told her I was listening to Neutral Milk Hotel.

And I remember in like year 7/8 people used to call me a goth because I liked Snow Patrol and Franz Ferdinand.

    Death metal
    Black metal
    Grindcore/Pornogrind/Goregrind
    Funeral doom
Some of the more hardcore punk I listen to (Throw Bricks At Coppers, Surf Nazis Must Die, etc)
    Drone

Pretty much 80% of the music I listen to awards me with a funny look from someone else, which is really ****ing annoying because it means I constantly have to play up to their music tastes whenever I'm in company or listen to them complaining about how what I listen to "isn't music".
I like to think I have open-minded friends... truth is, a majority of them are only open-minded when it comes down to what they listen to, which doesn't really say much for them.
    Ho hum.

My friend: Haven't you got anything better
    Me: Like what?
    My Friend: One Direction?

    Friendship over

Joking, but it did make me angry. .

My friends sometimes tell me that my favourite band is rubbish. I think they just do it to wind me up though.

I do admit to 'sneering' to some of their music though, usually when it's Dubstep or DnB. :giggle:

I listen to a lot of lo-fi music and music with a lot of reverb and drowned-out voices and stuff. A lot of people don't quite seem to get it. I also quite like the sound of old, primitive analogue synths from the 70s and 80s (as well as modern imitations of that kind of sound) and people don't seem to get that either.

    Haha

I hope Boyfriend gets to #1 today. It'll probably be Conor Maynard though.

I love rap / hip hop - from eminem down to the old stuff. My friends hate it! But at the end of the day, it's all down to personal taste, I mean I hate a lot of their poppy music!
