Re: What music do your friends sneer at?As I mentioned above, I see it as being about the atmosphere. Mayhem is not easy to listen to unless you are 'feeling it' and I wouldn't call myself a Mayhem fan in particular.(Original post by A Pink Monster)
Yeah, I agree, I've tried to listen to Black Metal such as Mayhem, but I don't really get it either. I do find the "message" and the "scene" interesting, but less so the music. What am I missing?
The music itself to me is not particularly complex, yet I find it interesting because it is raw. There's not so much fancy technical work to go "ooh, that's impressive". Instead you're left with chaotic, raw noise. I find the idea of capturing chaos into the format of music interesting.
People listen to black metal for different reasons though, and the above is just one of many.
Additionally the stories associated with the more famous bands puts the recordings almost as historical artefacts. Like de mysteriis dom sathanas had varg vikernes on bass and euronymous on guitar, shortly before varg murdered euronymous. Attila on vocals, while supposedly Dead wrote a lot of the lyrics before he killed himself. The recordings capture moments in time when these people were still on relatively good terms with each other, and more importantly still alive. -
Re: What music do your friends sneer at?People like us do exist...we just take a bit of finding :P(Original post by LittleMissLish)
Seconded haha :P I forgot Daughtry and 3 Doors down! Finally someone who likes similar bands!
So is Nickelback the heaviest music you're into? Or do you delve into the depths of heavy metal/metalcore etc?

Re: What music do your friends sneer at?
I love the band Europe, which due to their infamous single, The Final Countdown, I get a lot of stick for. Most people are unaware that they have actually released other stuff! My personal favourite is their 2006 release, Secret Society.
I own all their albums, and there's another coming up at the end of this month. They're also my favourite live band and I shall be seeing them for the 4th time later this year - got my tickets already! -

Re: What music do your friends sneer at?I don't think I've ever heard that much from people about my music taste (my parents critise it a bit - describing metal as a whole as "Just raa raa raa"), but friends all seem fine with it - apart from that time my flat were hosting a party and I queued up a load of punk (Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Ramones) and it quickly got taken off with the words "what is this rubbish?"

Re: What music do your friends sneer at?So many of my friends are raving about Reading, which I normally like the lineup of.. it's looking pretty naff this year though. Latitude ftw.(Original post by Doskey)
tell me about it. I saw the line-up for Latitude and I'm desperate to go however everyone I've asked just looks at me funny and says 'Reading's better', NO IT IS NOT! I've ran out of people to ask.

Re: What music do your friends sneer at?classic rock. i asked what they listen to. top 40 stuff. he he he.(Original post by Nice Marmite)
Hi!
The scenario goes like this:
You're in your room, calmly listening to some music on headphones or speakers or whatever
be it
or
or even
A fellow of yours listens in on the music (which you believe to be of a remarkably high quality and, interesting for its many intellectual crevices that are only appreciated on listening with open ear and mind
)...
This 'fellow' makes some snotty, condescending remark with a detestably sneering face etched upon their..... their.... well their face
Cue. Rage at their comment

So tell us, what artists have been wrongly sneered at by your used-to-be-fellow? How wrong were they? How did you react? -
Re: What music do your friends sneer at?
What friends?

Urm, I have a variety of friends anyway so people don't necessarily sneer at my music. I like music such as post-metal, classical, soundtracks, doom metal, ambient and god forbid some pop! Genre doesn't bother me, if it sounds good and if the lyrics aren't ****e then I will listen to it. -
Re: What music do your friends sneer at?<3 Elliot smith(Original post by LRodel)
My friends all laugh at my undying love for Elliott Smith and every single song he has ever written.... -
Re: What music do your friends sneer at?
Well unfortunately I'm on a course at uni with a load of arrogant hipsters so anything that's been in the chart or anything that's popular really.
I also listen to metal and hardcore which a few of my friends don't understand. "That's not music!" "It's just screaming!" is what they usually say. -
Re: What music do your friends sneer at?If a so called friend is screaming in your face about your music taste, id either knock them the **** out or get new friends tbh.(Original post by alexlduffy)
With a large chunk of my friends, it's anything that's not rock. Any artist that's even remotely recognisable is hated by them. I got laughed at for listening to Florence + the Machine despite the fact that none of them had heart a single Florence song. They do the same with artists they've never even heard of, like Clare Maguire. Sometimes, they take it too far though. One time, one of them saw I was listening to Jessie J, went through my iPod and roared at me in public for the music I listen to. Made me feel like absolute crap.
Then I have friends who claim they're "open about their music taste" yet they'll also treat me like crap if I like certain artists. Okay, yes, I like Ellie Goulding. That isn't an excuse to make me feel like I shouldn't like her music. I have a pretty diverse music taste so I have a few friends ask me to bring my iPod to parties, and they'll end up liking some new artists (I got someone at a party into Kerli because I Want Nothing started playing). However, I stopped doing that pretty quickly because I'd have people screaming in my face about how crap my music is.
I'm not saying they have to respect my music taste, or learn more about some of the artists I like. I just don't think they should go to the lengths they do.
I'm too damn sensitive to these things... -

How could anyone call The Ramones rubbish? -
