Bar staff...How did you get your job?
    Looking for a bar job.
Should I just walk in to loads of places and ask if they're taking on bar staff?

I was asked when I was walking around the village with my friend who had a job there and her boss saw us and asked me then.

I appliedmfor my bar job at the student union when i noticed the application form online.

I see a lot of bar jobs advertised on gumtree I do also think it helps of you know someone there, especially if they are a smaller pub where often they can be a bit cliquey.

For my first bar job - applying speculatively to 150 different places in the space of 3 weeks, and then a couple of things came together in a very random way and I got the job

Essentially persistence + volume of applications + a beefed up CV + smart dress (but not too smart - I find a smart shirt, smart (non-faded) black jeans and ballet flats works well).

Nowadays I've had so many bloody jobs in the industry that it's pretty much the same formula - but much less persistence required!

I don't quite think 'ballet flats' were quite what the OP was after given he's a bloke :P

What would people suggest a male wears to a Bar job interview? A white shirt and trousers?

    Minor details

Might be an asset if he's going for a job in a bar in Soho or Canal Street (Manchester) though

IMHO you want to look like you've put in a bit of effort, but not like you're dressed for an office. Certainly I've tried both styles, and found that too smart doesn't work, certainly if you're going for low - mid-range pubs and clubs. Think about what the customers are wearing and go half a notch smarter than them.

So, a decent shirt (not checked!), smart black jeans (not faded - it shouldn't be immediately obvious that they're jeans) and some smart shoes?

I got a job as bar staff at my local racecourse, not massively regular work as its only on racedays but its alright.

A few friends did it by just asking in the bars or through emailing their CVs and why theyre interested.

I saw an advert in my local pub, applied and got an interview. At first I didn't get the job- someone else did. But he quit after a few weeks and then I was called back and asked if I wanted it.

Never had a job before, let alone worked in a bar.

For Wetherspoons, you can just apply online.

Don't know about other places though, has anyone else applied online for anywhere else?
