Is 'Arab' a race?
I'm rather confused D:
In my dissertation survey, a person described their race as being 'Arab'.
I've googled this but I'd still like some clarification. Would this be the correct term to use? Is it Arab or Arabian? Could they be considered Asian?
I hope I don't offend any body but I'd like to be sure about writing down what race people are, it's something that the examiners might pick up on.

Re: Is 'Arab' a race?
The Arabs are a people. They are a Semitic race, predominantly in the Arabian peninsula, southern Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan and Palestine. The other Arabs are only partially of Arabic descent by race. People from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, etc gradually became Arab over the space of 1300 years due mainly to cultural, religious and linguistic shifts towards pan-Arabic way of life. They are mostly not Arabic by race, but they have some Arabic blood due to Arab immigration to the regions.

Re: Is 'Arab' a race? You're probably trying to be clever but humans are a species, not a race.(Original post by A level Az)
No there is just one race - the human race.

Re: Is 'Arab' a race?I took both.(Original post by SEHughes)
I think you'd have been better to survey by "ethnicity" rather than "race". -
Re: Is 'Arab' a race?An arab is technically white according to the US Census. The UK make no official statement on this.(Original post by aliluvschoc)

Re: Is 'Arab' a race?
The whole concept of race is best avoided if you are seeking a meaningful way to understand the divisions in humanity. It should really only come into play when you are seeking to understand how others who lack this understanding view or have viewed humanity. Arabs are a pretty classic case of how the modern concept of the 'ethnic group' does not clearly match up to 'race' as concieved in the psuedoscientifc theories of our forebears. They would have identified among Arabs a number of different races, all assimilated into linguisitic and (mostly) religious unity. We needn't trouble ourselves with the question at all, as we know that the concept of race has no scientific basis.

Re: Is 'Arab' a race?
IIRC, most Arabs are technically non-white Caucasians by race.
Damn, beat me to it.(Original post by hassi94)
An arab is technically white according to the US Census. The UK make no official statement on this.
I'm sure they're considered to be Caucasian, but I certainly wouldn't call them "white"... Still, I do believe that they hold the most attractive skin tone in the the world.

Re: Is 'Arab' a race?I took your survey, I am from Iraq (but am british - lived here for over 15 years), and I had to google because I was really unsure. I found that the US Census classes people from the middle east as 'white', while the UK don't make it very clear. So I put white.(Original post by aliluvschoc)

With some helpful advice - I'd make sure to do your survey not just to people on TSR. TSR students are students who were more likely to be buillied (obviously it's still a minority, but I imagine it'd be more common on here than what is representative in the UK) at school. -
Re: Is 'Arab' a race? The 2010 US Census says: “White” refers to a person having origins in any of the original peoplesof Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who indicated their race(s) as “White” or reported entries such as Irish, German,(Original post by JordanR)

Italian, Lebanese, Arab, Moroccan, or Caucasian.
And, why thank you..
