How good is the University of York?
Hi again -
I have been rejected by 4 of my 5 universities, the only one to accept me being York.
It might seem like a really stupid question, as a) I chose to apply there and b) there are lots of easily accessible league tables online, but the latter is really the problem! I've seen so many league tables, and all of them say different things - I've seen it rated as everything from 5th to 20th. And in regards to my first point, I chose it as a back up, rather than a first choice...
So, how good is York generally accepted to be or, even better, how was it if you went there yourself? (When I say "good", I mean in regards to not just teaching and results, but reputation too.) -
Re: How good is the University of York?I also read your other thread and looking at the universities you applied there were 4 good ones. York is really not that far behind them, I don't go there personally but I know a couple of people who are there currently and they love it.(Original post by OnADarklingPlain)

What you could do is accept York and see what grades you get in the summer. If you feel those grades are good enough to apply to the other top unis then reapply again next year if you're confident of getting in. If you don't think you will be successful next year with your summer grades or don't want the hustle of reapplying, or if you just don't want to take a gap year go to York. You may not like it purely because you have "bigged" up the other unis to be better than they actually are. York, in my opinion, is still a VERY respectful university. -
Re: How good is the University of York?
Where else did you apply/get rejected from? They are all missing out obviously!
York is a great uni with great facilities esp science, sports and maths.... What subject are you applying for?
The city is also very student friendly with many shops, restaurants etc that are in London but it also has the history and culture... Where are you living at the mo?
I've lived in York all my life so if you have any questions..
I might be able to help re the uni too.

Don't listen to league tables. York is a great university. It has a solid reputation. Rather than worrying, work hard and get the grades you need to get in.

What subject are you doing? I know it's very high for some subjects especially - when I applied there for my course it was 4th in the country behind Oxford, Cambridge and UCL.
In any case, though, it has a great reputation and York is a lovely place.

Re: How good is the University of York?I see that you read my other post(Original post by Gimothy)
I recommend Cambridge, Durham, Warwick or UCL. It is only at one of these that you will find any semblance of happiness

Re: How good is the University of York?I also applied to Cambridge, UCL, Warwick and Durham, and got interviews for the first 3.(Original post by BeccaCath94)

I'm studying English, and I currently live in Luton - I suppose that anywhere is better than Luton!
Thanks

Re: How good is the University of York?I don't know too much about its rankings for English specifically but any academic subject like that from the University of York will get you far, and make your CV very impressive.
I'm sure it's tough to overcome 4 rejections, but at least you've been rejected from 4 of the best unis in the country (and got an offer from one!!!) as opposed to being rejected from unis with rubbish reputations. Imagine how those people feel. Could be a lot worse, eh?!
Good luck. -
Re: How good is the University of York? Thanks, and good luck!(Original post by ConnorB)
Put it this way, York was the Only Uni to Reject me and I was somewhat devastated
It's a fantastic Uni
Exeter and Sussex is what I'm aiming for now!
