Resolution 2012/04 - Concerning the Situation in North Korea

A new resolution submitted by the representative for Japan and seconded by the representatives for the USA and the Republic of Korea.

Resolution

Committee: Security Council
Submitted By: Japan; the United States of America; the Republic of Korea

Concerned that North Korea's proposed satellite launch is, in fact, a cover for a long-range missile test;
Noting that other states are of the same opinion, including South Korea, Russia and the USA, as well as North Korea's ally China;
Alarmed by North Korea's repeated refusal to begin talks about the circumstances of the launch in a diplomatic manner, despite international opinion being weighed against them;
Remembering that the food parcels from the US have ceased due to the situation;
Worried that these tests and North Korea's refusals to co-operate are a threat to stability.

1. Condemns North Korea's ignorance of the international community's opinion on the matter;
2. Calls that the proposed operation to be ceased immediately;
3. Summons North Korea to discuss the matter with the international community openly, with particular dialogue being given to Japan, South Korea, Russia, China and the US;
4. Reminding North Korea that food parcels from the US have stopped due to the situation, and that it is in its people's interests to comply with these terms;
5. Agrees to re-assess the situation after said talks have finished.

India believes that, although concerned that it could be a cover up for a long range missile test, it is North Korea's right as a sovereign country to attempt to launch a satellite, provided that no other countries are unwillingly affected.

It also asks what must North Korea do to stop being sanctioned? It seems as if other countries are happy with the existence of North Korea as long as they become exactly like them.

We the US continue to support this resolution and stand by Japan in our resolve.
Poll is up!
I have added a vote of "Abstain" on behalf of the representative for Russia who is currently absent.
