Are you using Resnet and having connection problems?
Well, I can tell you now that the proxy/webcache service (wwwcache.lancs.ac.uk) is no longer a requirement from the Resnet connection process.

    Proof?

(Original post by ISS Monkey 2)
I do the work to remove the proxy requirement from ResNet tomorrow morning at 7am, during which ResNet will loose access to the internet/network for a brief period.
If you are experiencing slowdowns on the network when you get back to halls on campus, disable the webcache and the problems should go away. As far as I'm aware, the proxy is still on WiNet for the time being. an official message will likely arrive soon.

    (Source: http://www.lancs.ac.uk/iss/gatechange).

I hope this is of use to you as you return to campus.

    Regards,

    Tathrim

Well this morning went relatively well. We're seeing ResNet using vastly more bandwidth then it was prior to today. I accidentally broke connectivity for users who were using the webcache for about two hours. I fixed this at around 9:30. You are of course free to try removing the webcache, officially we aren't telling people to remove the PAC yet incase we have to roll back for whatever reason. Looking good though.

Is this change likely to stay? I must say I am very happy with it as I have already updated two programs I previously couldn't.

    Feedback is positive

I believe that's the plan, given the replaced equipment.

Yup the plan is for it to remain... we always have to put the proviso for rolling it back in case something really bad happens.

I'm been mainly involved in the technical aspect of this project rather then communication. So I'd like to point out the following URL, which is displayed to you when you register a machine. It has since changed after this morning.

    https://resnet.lancs.ac.uk/quota.html

The TL;DR is that your quota is raising from 30Gb to 100Gb, but it now includes web traffic. The number wasn't just plucked from the air, we looked at what 99% of the students were using and aimed there while taking into account the resources we have for you to use.

Enjoy the connection, unless you end up working at an ISP/University it's probably the fastest and lowest latency connection you'll get to use until we really do get Fibre to the Home (and even then the latency will be higher).

Awesome news, I'm keeping an eye on things over the weekend as the majority of you are coming back atm. Everything is looking good.

Ya not using as much bandwidth as I expected you to, but hey ho. I guess with a quota you can't go nuts.

Assuming I've found the right you in our system based on your TSR username, your PS3 is registered and it's online in ResNet. It has an IP and our monitoring servers have been able to communicate to it.

If you had the webcache set you could try unsetting it? Otherwise you'll need to find someone else around here who's managed to get it to work.

I'm having the same problem. It finds my IP address and connects to the internet but still fails connecting to the PSN.

Anyone tell us what they did to get on? Step-by-step instructions?

since the upgrade where browser cache is no longer needed, internet speed has been epic

this speed test I just took right now at mid-day, first day back for this term:

challenge you to find speed so epic anywhere in world lol

    Then double the quota.
We review the quota as occasion calls, we'll watch what happens over the remainder of the academic year. It's designed as a limit, not as a challenge to be beaten. If you're running out try not downloading the world and showing some self restraint .

We've had a quick look at your quota (graphs shapes are nicely distinguisable). From the data we have (and there's way more then the simple number we give you) I can see your burning through data.

Dare I even ask what you got banned from? No, there's no way to change your external IP address, it's allocated by the firewall by random. I'm not even sure how we'd influence it on a case by case basis.

I was joking, but I'm aware that it would be something like that, and wasn't surprised when the HTTP change occurred (especially as Steam now uses HTTP for it's downloads and updates).

I've used a fair chunk of data, but I was aware of how much I'd used before each one was initiated, and (as a CS student) I have a good idea of the amount of data used for updates/normal traffic in games, so have plenty of quota left.

For the people having problems with their PS3's. For me I just disabled all of the proxy settings from my PC i.e. in my browser and the main internet options.
