Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012I'm not on this course but my course Computer Games Technology shares many units with Computer Animation.(Original post by ELs123)
Anyone applying for this year / applied?
Anyone who is in a higher year that can comment on the course?
I can say if you're interested in 3d modelling it's a really good and relevant course. I'm jealous of some of the units you guys have, even though we're all doing the same 'career path'.
There are so many opportunities for you like helping with the Stine and the Wolf film project, it's really big and amaziing, so get on it as soon as you start. It will open so many doors for you in the future and improve your skills to a commercial level.
Not sure what to say, the course looks great and the lecturers our courses share are pretty damn good too. Lots of facilities- full mocap room, VR room too...
Just enjoy the course

Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012Yea 3D modelling / level design is what I wanted to do initially but did not find any courses focusing on it, Portsmouth seemed a good blend of 3D and animation(Original post by parasitic)

I have only seen the mocap room but yea the facilities looked good. Is it possible to get a job working in the mocap room and VR room part time? I think it was mentioned by someone at the open day but I cant really remember -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012Yeah you can get a job in the mocap room. I know 3 people from 2nd year working there(Original post by ELs123)

There are also lab technician jobs available, so if you have the knowledge go for it
) Not sure about VR room though.

Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012Nice might give it a go if I get in :P(Original post by parasitic)

Do you need to be a second year to work there or is it just because they have more experience with the mocap room they got the jobs? -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012No it's due to experience and knowledge really. They suggest first and 2nd years to apply for those jobs..but in my experience not many first years are capable of it.. However there's always a few special people every year(Original post by ELs123)

I see
I take it your course is more the technical side?
What units do the courses share? -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012can you elaborate some more please as why you thought the course was ****?(Original post by Sod16)
All I can say is good luck, you should have gone hertfordshire for animation.
Trust me.
I know. -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012
I finished the course a couple of years ago and also thought it was pants. Although since they have made the units much better and more relevant to the industry. I now work in the film VFX industry and I would say 80% of stuff I know I had to learn myself as the course was very much geared towards the games industry.
-
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012I am on a gaming related course at the moment and when I attended the open day it seemed more geared towards the film / tv industry than to games. Perhaps it has changed since then?(Original post by cctij69)

Would you recommend the course if someone wants to get into the gaming industry? or is it still pants. -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012
ELs123. It is still pants.
There is no real competition when it comes to 3D art work and they keep telling you to "LEARN AT HOME". You pay 3 Grand to learn at home. A bunch of the second years now like (Parasitic) Think its gods gift to man. I will tell you what, they are wrong. If you want to do 3D art or animation stay away from bsc's. It just means exams and essays. You need SKILL for any industry, not how well you can write a essay. I do Computer games technology. In animation they will make you do waste of time sciencey exam units where you learn **** all.
Hertfordshire, de monford any skillset 3D art course will do you fine. -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012
Modelling/Animation can't be that hard surely? Especially if you are introduced to it in the first year. I am just saying that because I tried my hand in Maya which is used to model things, the only thing I managed to make is an ice cream and cone.
Is this subject somehow connected to other creative courses aswell? -
Re: Computer Animation at Portsmouth 2012Sounds like you don't enjoy your course, a bit like my IT course I just done, there were a few units that I really found hard e.g. networking and the TCP/IP layer, I don't want to get specific and I hate networking in general, I just had to write what it does and go in depth on the subject to get the top marks. But IT is always gonna contain some element of networking.(Original post by Sod16)
It's one or two units of modelling and a lot of bull**** theory.
Whereas animation/games would be alot more interesting and fulfilling, and I'd expect you would have different classes every week like one for programming, for animation and others for business or general stuff.
Tell me what I have to look forward to, speak your mind and be honest so I can prepare for the worst.
