Do people have laptops in lectures?
I'm just really curious and excited for uni, I was wondering. Do people take their laptops to lectures? Especially lectures like Computer Science/Computer Engineering (I'll be doing the latter.)

I type 110WPM on a keyboard and hate writing and can barely do it. My hands ache and my hand writing isn't exactly good for taking notes xD

You guys think I could do it when I go? Especially since it's a computer related subject?

Yes. 110% certain you can do that. I imagine a good fraction of students will use laptops and those who don't either prefer to write or can't be bothered/don't want to risk carrying one about every day.

Yes but these people never make it out alive because sooner or later someone will kill them when no one can hear the lecturer because of their incessant tap tap tapping.

On the other hand, if you have a very quiet keyboard and you don't mess around on Facebook/play Solitaire/watch porn thus distracting others, go ahead :cookie:

But yes, most are fine, especially in Science subjects, and everyone (near enough) has them in CompSci

How on earth does going on Facebook distract others.

Yeah i'm from a CS background and surprising only about 1/4 bring in laptops but depends on the module.. However most of the people who bring in laptops actually bring in a MAC and quite a few students bring in ipad

All the CES (Computer and Electronic Systems) stream people on my course use them...for Facebook.
The majority/all of our lectures involve equations and diagrams, which would be really awkward on a laptop.

Laptops are handy in the library and group work, but not for note taking.
Some people bring a tablet so they have a PDF of the slides open on it.

Because they're rude and look over the owner's shoulder.

Yes many people take them. I can't take mine, because the battery won't last 10 mins without being plugged in and the wifi would tempt me to go on facebook. But some of my friends bring theirs, and half the time they take notes and the other half they play games.

Although one particular lecture one student was looking up what the lecturer was saying, found out some of it was wrong and sent an email then and there saying they were wrong. Later that day everyone got an email from said lecturer correcting themself when he'd only mistaken the name of someone's wife. Not sure the lecturer was a big fan of laptops in lectures after that...

Yeah, quite a large portion of my lectures at uni had people with laptops, computer science though. Greek letters/formulae aren't bad if you're quick enough/familiar enough with LaTeX to make your notes

It's more when they're going through different profiles and constantly changing pages that it's distracting. For me anyway

Turn down the brightness and or get one of those privacy filters for your laptop that people can only see if they're looking directly at your screen, otherwise they see a black screen. £10-15 investment, problem solved.

Or just buy a laptop with a cheap crappy screen which has a narrow viewing angle. And that'd actually save money.

Yeah a sizeable number of people bring them, but usually seem to end up on facebook/hotmail/twitter rather than taking notes.

I hate (strong word but necessary) people who bring laptops to lectures. The sound of the keys tapping away drives me insaneee, just make notes and write it up later you selfish cretins!!!! That's right. CRETINS. All the laptoppers sit together in my lectures, safety in numbers and all that.
