What key career opportunities can arise from a history degree?
Sorry if it has already been asked previously but what key careers would studying a degree in history open up? I'm doing my AS levels right now and history AS is the only subject I'm actually enjoying. My other subjects arent going so well, so if i keep this up I'll probably end up in a average at best university, is it worth studying history? I'm one of those that has very little idea of what I want to be in the future Thanks x

It's really broad and traditional. Most employers hold it in high regard.

    Teaching
    Academia
    Civil Service
    Journalism
    Editing/Publishing/Advertisement
    Local government
    Law
    Curatorship
    Media

Most stuff that requires analytical, evaluative and written skills can be unlocked with a good history degree.

Well, you should definitely pick up some of the relevant skills for it, although I imagine that success in the journalistic field will come from experience as well.

Write for your university paper/journal/magazine and submit some stories free-lance to your local rag.

Accountancy through a training contract, retail graduate schemes or you could study a graduate diploma in law. However if you don't get a 2.1 then a hairdressing course at a technical college is more useful.

THe majority of History grads from my Uni (uni of Aberdeen) go into HR, random I know, but I believe this is due to Aberdeen being the Oil Capital of Europe so there are piles of jobs up here. There are conversion courses for law, and you can do a masters in a variety of things that would get you into a profession. Basically the world is your oyster, but you have to make sure you get plenty of other things on your CV, internships, committee members in societies etc. all to maximise your employment chances

Agree with most of the others. It's broad and held in fairly high regard.

Most people tend to go into HR, archiving, local government and academia; but also many go into business.

It's one of those degrees that really teaches you how to think analytically about everything. You'll come out hating the world and criticising everyone and looking like a dick though.

One of my boyfriend's flatmates is doing History and then converting to Law. Another guy I know is studying Ancient History and he has no idea why. Do plenty of research before you commit to UCAS!
