Re: So which MMORPG should I play?Platform for socializing? What? Perhaps in the past but the last time I looked most certainly not in fact it was Blizzard themselves who teared apart the close knitted communities. World PvP is a shattered joke, people can complete the majority of group quests on their own with little issues and the Dungeon finder has left people to join in groups with random strangers and if by gods chance they actually become friends with someone they have to go back to their own server with no further contact lol. Sure, a platform for socializing with your friends but if your friends don't wish to play said game/genre etc then WoW is no longer a suitable game for finding new friendships.(Original post by lubus)
If that is what you think of wow, which is without doubt the best mmo, then the genre isnt for you. The thing is, as long as there is high server load it doest matter what you do, as long as it is even remotely fun. The game is a platform for socialising, through quests, raids etc. Raids are not actually done to get the gear/kill the dragon - if thats what you do it for, you're playing the wrong game. Its done to have fun with your guild. If you are looking for anything skill based in a mmo, you're an idiot.
Sorry to break it to you but some people do actually look for something highly challenging (aka skill based as you put it) within an MMO, like it or not they're part of the target audience which is to be tended to although much less so compared to the vast numbers of casual, semi-hardcore etc players. There is a reason why raids like Sunwell Plateu were released and the concept of hard modes via achievements or some way or another - to cater to that part of the player base or these on the professional level. -
Re: So which MMORPG should I play?
I was so tempted to get SWTOR, I loved the previous games. Was gutted when they made it an MMORPG, but given how great those previous games where I nearly bought it. The thing that put me off was some negativity coming out over it being pretty boring apart from the story line and of course the monthly fees. Reading all that has been said here I'm pretty happy I didn't spend the money on it.
I played GW1 and have to say it was pretty fun overall for a while but got a bit boring as well. Looking at GW2 has however got me interested again, it looks great and listened to some reviews of the beta and they seem positive. It also has no monthly fees.
Eve sounds interesting and different, but monthly fees (how much are they by the way??)
.... think I'll give GW2 a try, do people think then it'll be a good and better than SWTOR?

Re: So which MMORPG should I play?Tbh i really don't get all the hate coming from reviewers about SWTOR, the leveling process is better than any mmo I've ever played, i mean they actually have voice actors for ever single quest giver with multiple dialogue options even for the more run of the mill "filler" quests. The story line for some of the classes is a bit bleh (i found inquisitor and consular really tedious) but love the imperial agent, sith warrior and Jedi knight storyline. Judging by server populations it is by far the most successful new mmo that has been released in the last few years and judging by the level of updates being released Bioware are happy continuing to invest a lot of time and money into improving it.(Original post by PJ07)

GW2 does look awesome though, defo gonna buy it when it comes out. Think I'll probably end up playing both, GW2 for the massive battles and SWTOR for the smaller ranked pvp. -
Re: So which MMORPG should I play?
I would play WoW if you want decent end game raiding PvE content. If you want to PvP competitively then play a different game. The raiding scene in WoW can't really be matched by any game. Ignore anyone who says it isn't difficult, they haven't played the game at more than a casual level. You can spend 20 hours a week raiding & still take months to clear content. As such WoW has some of the hardest PvE content available in any MMORPG. It also has easier difficulties that can be cleared on a more casual schedule, including an automated system that puts you into raids with random players.

Re: So which MMORPG should I play?
I'm going to put in a vote for WoW. Gorgeous environments, lots to do and caters to loads of different play styles. Fun to play solo or as a team (group, raid, PvP, etc). Loads of interesting lore, fun quests and sweet raid encounters. End-game is all about the right class, the right 'spec' and the right gear. They are making classes ever similar in order to not penalise groups for taking/not taking certain players, which means that everyone gets a go (in theory) but the classes lose what is special or interesting about them. However, the encounters are fun and skill does come into it. When you have three players of the same class, spec and gear then skill is the only distinguishing factor. Makes for some rivalry! I don't raid for gear, I raid for the sake of raiding. I love the environments, the lore, the atmosphere of the places. When I look back to The Burning Crusade or The Wrath of the Lich King, I remember how it felt and not what gear I got.
And I you don't want to play 'cookie cutter' style, fill your boots. You might not get a place in a high-end progressive raiding guild but skill does speak for itself and there is a lot of fun to be had outside of the scripted group encounters.
I could never get on with Guild Wars as it's not really an MMO and some of the restrictions were weird. Very liner and almost like a single-player game in some respects. Granted, I didn't get to top level as I found it a little frustrating. The end-game PvP is supposed to be very tactical and dynamic, and the combat system requires some thought to get the best build for each encounter. The hybrid class system is interesting as well.
Eve is spectacular and truly epic, but a 'slow' game in the sense that everything takes a long time and it requires a lot of work to get a decent ship. The idea of 'free for all' sections of space where you can essentially lose everything gives it some excitement and risk, and the trade and economy is well developed. The music is lovely as well.
Rift is OK. I didn't like the art style and found it too similar to WoW (without being noticably better) to get my attention. Not sure if Age of Conan is even going anymore. That promised awesome things but they screwed it up fairly well. -
Re: So which MMORPG should I play? It's hard, time-consuming, and I don't like the 'vibe' of it either. Just does not feel like a game you play for fun, feels more like a chore playing it...more out of habit rather than out of pure enjoyment.(Original post by Aphotic Cosmos)
People who say EVE sucks generally just suck at playing it.
EVE is hard. We need a whaaaambulance here! -
Re: So which MMORPG should I play?
There's quite a few MMOs out there, however, let's face it - WoW is the only one worth playing. The others just don't have enough players and content compared to WoW (apart from Everquest). World of Warcraft has three expansions, another one coming out soon, loads of players, and so much to do that you will find yourself utterly immersed in it on unhealthy levels if you're not careful.

Re: So which MMORPG should I play?Well it is no surprise that they are making an mmo as they have and a studio dedicated to online games for a few years now, but from what that quote says, it too will be more generic ****.that’s based on the fact that it’s described as having Warcraft-style mechanics. Toolbars with skills loaded onto them, third-person perspectives for all and a concession to classes and levels.
Why these retard devs think that an mmo has to be done in WoW styled mechanics is beyond me. If they had released Skyrim with such mechanics it would have failed, so why are they changing it?
Also after the disaster SWTOR is turning out to be, what are they thinking?
The fact that the person writing the article merely says "It sounds fine" sums it up that it has already failed as people should be going nuts with excitement at even hearing such an idea
Do you think it has potential or could be good? -
Re: So which MMORPG should I play?I have to admit, I'm not excited for it. The only MMO that got me excited for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Even that had so much force and anticipation behind it both in terms of the promised vision and media hype. This was more like 'meh' when I heard it announced. There are so many generic fantasy MMOs and I prefer the series as a single player experience. Co-op may have been good in Skyrim but beyond that, meh.(Original post by Jimbo1234)

Re: So which MMORPG should I play?Very true. I think what needs to happen is a "Halo" mmo to be made. Until Halo, every fps was pretty damn similar and the genre had not received any innovation for years. The corridor crawl had been refined to the best it could be (HL2), but it was still limiting. Then of course Halo came along and changed everything. WoW is like the HL2 of mmo's and something new needs to be made.(Original post by Ape Gone Insane)

Mmo's still have huge potential, especially with the pvp sandbox idea, along with mass player created events, large scale customisation etc, but no one is willing to push the boundaries and break away from current trends for some odd reason (and I don't think it is money because any mmo is expensive to develop and maintain)

Re: So which MMORPG should I play?
I played guild wars 1 for about 4 years so I know what I'm talking about wrt GW. I'd seriously recommend it.
GW1 just became one big experiment. ANet tried to figure out what was good and what was bad. They really wanted to set themselves apart from wow but they also wanted to make the game challenging and IMO from what I've read from people's comments, watching videos... They really have.
I'm really looking forward to it. I've played wow and it's a joke once you've played guild wars 1. The grind is unbearable, and ANet really do deliver when they say they don't want grind.
There was a retail site (can't remember which) that had a June 26th release date for Guild Wars 2. From all the speculation a June release seems likely, since the Beta's will finish soon (or already have). Hopefully this means there will be an announcement by the end of May. -

...if i rememeber rightly its a spirit that causes 50 dmg and kd's the target!
Don't play GW1 - It's dead. PvE is full of 'tards, PvP is totally dead.
GW2 should be good. The mechanics are far more pve based, but WvW and 5v5 battles look decent. Rumour has it that Anet are releasing a final pvp type within the next month to be used by the beta team before release. A memeber of the TK told me it's going to be similar to GvG, but with HA tendancies aswell. I just pre-ordered it tonight as I couldn't play the beta weekends before so it seemed pointless, but now I'm looking forward to it!
So yeah, get GW2 when it comes out on the 28th June!
