Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!I knew that.(Original post by mikestraws)
Take your total calories for the day and divide by 6. Not rocket science.
I'm talking about portion sizes, say if one doesn't have a weighing scale on them, how would you know what is acceptable to eat as a small meal?(Original post by Discouraged One)
You could think about it in terms of calories?
Say your need to be consuming 2000 calories a day, you'd divide that by the six meals and you'd have, roughly, 333 calories per meal. You'd need to make sure you were consuming 'good calories' though. As obviously two packets of crisps don't count as a meal.

This speeds up your metabolism, and combined with cardio you will burn more fat rather than eating 3 big meals. Breakfast should be your largest meal of the day.
So much fail. -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!I work 730 till 6 and i manage 7-8 meals a day.(Original post by TheEnigmaUK)
If you're a trained fighter or athlete, then understandably it's easier to eat 6 meals a day, and for an athlete it would probably be beneficial for energy. But for a normal working person it's nearly impossible, if not impossible to eat that often during the day. Even if you're a student it's still difficult (but doable) because of classes and what not. But for a 9-5 worker, it's near on impossible to do, and you'd soon get discouraged and lose motivation to follow that type of diet. At the end of the day, losing weight has always been about burning more than you consume.
When your colleagues snack on crisps and choccy, you eat meat, nuts, shake.
It really isnt that difficult -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!
For me eating 6 meals a day was good for bulking and getting good gains at the beginning... but I started to realise even though I was eating 6 meals I wasn't gaining much muscle which you don't after noob gains. Now I have 3 solid meals and 2 shakesand gain muscle the same and I'm not as fat or force feeding. If I took steroids I would go back to eating 6 meals.
Not hard to get 150-200g of protein over 3 meals and a couple of shakes. -

Here are some scientific studies showing evidence that meal frequency has NO EFFECT on "metabolism" and how much weight you lose.

Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!
Well regardless of whether or not it helps weight loss I eat a few small meals a day because I find it difficult to eat 2 large main meals per day - I can't eat a whole plate of food in one go. Also I tend to get snacky if I just stick to 2 main meals, whereas when I eat small meals throughout the day I don't snack as often if at all on some days.
I guess it's a subjective thing. -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!I wouldnt call a 100 calorie drink a meal, that'd like saying a boiled egg is classed as a meal.(Original post by S23a)
Having a protein shake counts as a 'meal' btw. -

Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!People tend to over-think this sort of thing and consequently fail miserably. Stick in some milk, have a piece of fruit with it and it's a meal.(Original post by cowsforsale)

Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!
I was under the impression that eating 6 meals a day is more about keeping blood glucose levels constant, and maintaining regular energy supplies rather than having to wait hours for the next meal?
Or is this just bro-science?Last edited by MissLightyear; 18-04-2012 at 19:38. -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!
The people that are saying that 'you'll snack less so you'll lose weight' are missing the point. If you ate a similar amount of calories in three meals as opposed to six it makes no difference to weight loss, which I believe is what the OP is trying to say.

Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!broscience, unless you're diabetic, your body is (usually) quite good at maintaining its blood glucose level.(Original post by MissLightyear)

Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!Another misconception, that you need 1g of protein to pound of bodyweight, it's untrue. You realistically only need 1.2 - 1.5g of protein to kg of bodyweight. You don't need all this protein to build muscle, it's just a load of hype that people who are not experts will follow because they see some muscle bound guys advertising their stuff.(Original post by duharvalgt)
yep because I'm really going to eat all of my protein over a couple meals... -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!I tried it for a month straight, no junk food at all. But I found I didn't lose anything significant, and I struggled to eat every 2.5 - 3 hours, mainly because I kept forgetting which is why I stopped doing it after a month. But during this time I was doing interval training too, so the difference in my body I'm sure was because of the cardio. I find that when I do little cardio with weights, I don't lose much, but when I do interval cardio and weight training I find my body changes. As the articles mention, this type of dieting can work for some people, but why eat to live? I can't remember who it was, but I read in men's health that one of the action movie stars ate 2 big meals a day to get in shape for a film, and he looked frigging ripped to the bone (in a good way!).(Original post by mikestraws)
Actually, it's not a case of "it does work" or "it doesn't work" or "it's a myth" it's a case of it might work for you try it and see.
I eat every 3 hours or so, and it works for me. Keeps me feeling full, keeps the cravings at bay and I'm losing weight.
Utter crap. If you have time to take a piss at work you have time to eat a meal. A protein shake and a banana? Done. 350 calories worth of mixed nuts? Done.
Why is it more money to spend on food? You are eating the same amount of food but instead of 3 bigger meals its six smaller ones.
I'm not saying you're wrong im not saying I'm right but you clearly have never tried this and if you have tried it you didn't do it properly. -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!Would be interested if you had a source for this, or just anybody who recommends it.(Original post by TheEnigmaUK)

Thinking about it, I haven't really been eating 1g of protein per 1lb of bodyweight (certainly not recently) and I've still grown and got stronger. -
Re: Eating 5-6 times a day is a fitness myth. You won't burn more fat doing this!Yeah if you work in an office it's not hard at all. If you work in an office. And sitting down most of the time.(Original post by McHumpy92)
Yeah I don't get why people say it is impossible to eat in an office when people have cigarette breaks and constantly going the vending machines. You can also shovel in a lot of food in 2 mins.
