Mini pill vs. Depo shot
I've just come off the regular pill after being on it for 2 and half years due to frequent migraines, and I'm wondering what to try next.
My doctor recommended the mini pill or the depo shot but said I should wait 2 months to decide.
I'm not really concerned about using them for contraception right now because I'm not with anybody and I don't think I'll be having casual sex anytime soon
but I am concerned about my periods because before going on the pill they were extremely heavy and painful (that was the reason I started taking it).
I've read both positive and negative things about each of them and I just don't know which one to use! If you're currently on one of these methods then please let me know how they've been for you. -
Re: Mini pill vs. Depo shot
Out of the two of them, I would recommend the mini pill, that's what I was on until recently (microgynon). I actually came off of it because I felt like it was making my mood swings worse, but that just depends on the person. My periods don't hurt me anywhere near as much as they used to. If they did then I would still be on the mini pill, because painful periods are way worse than any of the side effects in my opinion. I never got any migraines from it.
I wouldn't get the depo shot. I haven't had it myself, but literally everyone I know who has said they had bad side effects. Also, you can't really change your mind once you've had it. If you don't like the mini pill, at least you can come off of it.
A tip for painful periods - do a lot of exercise, especially cardio, the week before your period is due. It really helps me for some reason.
Hope that helps

Re: Mini pill vs. Depo shotThanks! Yeah I was thinking that about the mini pill too, the ability to come off of it easily I mean. I would want it to be a good contraceptive too if I need it in the near future as well as being able to use it for my periods.(Original post by meow444)

I don't know anyone who gets the depo shot and I've only know one person to be on the mini pill and they said it was just as good as the regular pill. I've read quite a few horror stories about the depo shot so I'm not so keen on it!
I would ordinarily ask my friends which one to use but I think we're all on the regular pill! -
Re: Mini pill vs. Depo shotReally? I thought it was very outdated to prescribe the regular pill now. Everyone I've talked to seems to be on the mini pill. Weird!(Original post by Anonymous)

I caught an STI off my last boyfriend, and he convinced me he was STI free, and I stupidly trusted him. So I would definitely advocate using condoms as well as the pill. -
Re: Mini pill vs. Depo shot
I intially went to the clinic to get the depot (which is an injection in the bum fyi... might sway the decision) because i thought you had to take the mini-pill the same time every day and being a student nurse that wouldnt work for me. But after being informed that with cerazette as long its within 12 hours your fine, i went with that. Its been great, i mean the first few days were like having PMT for the 2nd time in a month and i have been getting food craving buts thats something i can manage. I hope this helps you make your decision, Good Luck!
