Hello there,

At the moment I'm applying for an MRes in Human Geography at the University of Hull. I am confident that I'll get an offer and am looking forward to start in September.

Looking a bit further into the future, I am considering applying for a PhD after obtaining my MRes; something I'll have to do quite early in the next academic year because funding is a major issue and if I can't get any, I'll have to start looking for a (non-academic) job (elsewhere/back in Holland/etc.).
For PhD's I'm looking at universities in English speaking countries (I'm Dutch, studying in Hull at the moment) because my husband has a say in where we go as well , and he prefers to live in an English speaking country.

Within Britain, Durham seems to be a very, very good choice considering the size and research opportunities of their Geography department and their ranking; especially in the North, where we prefer to stay.

Of course I still have to finish my BA, let alone start my MRes, but a girl can dream, can't she?

So I'm looking for some first hand information on for example the application process, funding opportunities, but also atmosphere at the university/department and the city of Durham itself.

If someone (or more people) could give me an insight into the Durham - postgraduate/PhD 'scene', that would be awesome!
