Rihanna can't hold a note for **** these days but she does have some OKAY performances*. her style, tone and accent is what makes her stand out as a vocalist. Other than that, Rihanna is a product, way more than most other singers. it's kinda sad. her new "policy" of releasing an album a year is purely engineered to keep her in the spotlight, she's more of a fashion icon than a music icon. I think that kinda sucks. However I like her and she's released a ton of great tunes. you can't really expect more. also comparing her to laura marling is DUMB AS.

the whole chris brown thing is just.... beyond comment. i will say that i like her refusal to allow that incident to define how she acts as an artist etc blah blah. JCC-MGS's post was truth too. i think it's sad she worked with him again but it's not really my place to judge, and the number of people that seem to think it's theirs pisses me off...

She has catchy songs that a lot of people like and that's why she's successful. Plus, anyone's seen her perform live will know that she does sing live with the help of a few backing singers, and doesn't just mime. Even when she doesn't have backing singers and sings over a backing track you can still hear her vocals pretty clearly.

The whole 'sex sells' thing has been exaggerated imo. Rihanna / David Guetta's Who's That Chick and Nicki Minaj's Starships reached the UK top 10 without a music video, so clearly people aren't downloading the tracks just because of the 'sexual message'. (and I'm no NM fan).

It seems that any artist that becomes really successful will have a bunch of haters out there criticising their every move, but when Rihanna said in an interview not long ago that she never claimed to be a role model and that she believes it's a parents job to bring up their kids how they want, and not down to celebrities to be role models I think she had a point.

Somehow I think if Adele was slimmer, she too would have sexed up her image a la Rihanna / Katy Perry. A sexier image =/= no talent. Why does nobody ever criticise Beyonce for doing the same?

I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this, but they're just my 2 cents.

ITA with this, especially with the bit I highlighted in bold. How can anyone expect her to be a role model for young girls? Her music isn't exactly suitable for them to listen to, and they are not aimed at them. Of course, she is always in the press, but still...so what? What ever happened to mothers/aunties/grandmothers being a role models instead of celebrities?

I think because of her sexy and raunchy image, people hate on her. People also hate on her for what happened with Chris Brown - they think she's to blame (talk about victim blaming ). But some hate the fact they she reunited with Chris Brown to make a song, because it's like she's gone back to a guy who hurt her (though they aren't back together) and so some people think it's likely that they will get back together and so he may hurt her again.

I dislike her because:

- She does not create music in any way, shape or form. She's a karaoke singer. A vocally poor one, too. When people say they like Rihanna, what they should be saying is "I like Rihanna's production team, songwriting team, sound engineering team" etc...
- She's talentless (if anyone disagrees I'm happy to be proved wrong)
- She's just another tedious dullard using sex to sell music (she's not the only one, but it is a reason why I dislike her)
- It's straightforward, overhyped, creatively bankrupt pop music that will be forgotton in 5 years when another 20-ish, half-naked, somewhat attractive karaoke singer comes along to take her place. Repeat till fade.
- Her fans are totally cringeworthy for the most part.

It's more than that. There are people who make terrible music who I don't dislike, such as Peter Andre. Terrible musician and a bit of a sap but comes across a good egg and a nice person.

I don't hate Rihanna, I like some of her music and I think that generally most of the hate is exaggerated. She's very successful for someone so young and with such huge success comes a certain amount of hatred, ridicule and jealousy. She gets more hate than Beyonce, for example, because I think Beyonce has crafted a nicer public image and appears more grateful for her amazing career than Rihanna. I think some people see Rihanna as too over-sexualised but she obviously has tons of fans anyway because nearly all her songs hit the top spot

I can't be bothered to look for the rest but assume she's had some form of input into those too. She by default is 100 times more respectable than Rihanna, plus Beyonce can actually sing.

I listened to her singing those songs live and it was horrible - and yes, she wasn't dancing, just moving her hands and jumped in some places lol. She sounded very different. But for her other songs, she's ok

to be fair interviews consist largely of vapid questions. some of the quotes i hear from her are pretty cool e.g. "how do you feel about being linked with guys you're just hanging out with? is it frustrating?" "yeah it is frustrating... almost as frustrating as being asked about it all the time" (from memory so may not be totes accurate)

tbh i think she comes across as bored a lot of the time more than anything. which is bad PR for sure. but i'd probably be bored too.

I like Rihanna's music, but I'm mixed on how she comes across as a person.

Also, the idea of "Why should you listen to this when you can listen to this instead?" is a terrible argument. People listen to a variety of different songs for different reasons. I listen to both Rihanna and Laura Marling, but I wouldn't listen to Laura Marling if I wanted to loosen up and have a bit of fun, and I wouldn't listen to Rihanna if I wanted deep lyrics. It's possible to listen to both of them, as well as a large range of music.

Although i'm well aware she doesn't write or produce any of her music and that her voice is pretty average, i don't see what's wrong with liking some of it. Music doesn't always have to have some really deep meaning for me to enjoy it.

Atleast i don't dislike her just because she's 'soooo mainstream'. I just know that if i do like one of her songs i give the credit to her production team.

I used to like her, until the other day when the photo came out with her rolling a blunt/cutting cocaine on someones head in coachella, and she took about 5 pics of it.

Take drugs , do whatever you want, noone cares, why feel the need to take a load of pics of it, and then instagram it its just showing off that she does it so she adds to her 'image' . sad really.
