Is it possible to get a graduate job as an economist?
Not sure if this is the correct place to past this, but i'll go ahead.
Basically, is it possible to get a job as an economist, straight from university with a degree in economics? I know of the GES etc etc, but this is only 1 route, and i was wondering if anyone can offer any help on any other routes.
I know a postgraduate degree is probably more benefical as well, but im more just wondering at this stage.
Any help would be great -
Re: Is it possible to get a graduate job as an economist?Yeah. I guess this is what concerns me... Im only a second year at the minute, so i still have tome to think about a MSc. Thanks for the help though(Original post by Regent)
Yes. There are several economic consultancies and other institutions (the FSA, Big 4, Bank of England off the top of my head) which offer 'Economist' graduate schemes. However having an Msc, and in some cases a PhD are virtual prerequisites. -

My experience trying to get a job like this has been that to call yourself a professional economist, you need to have at least a masters degree!
If you prefer macro to micro, Capital Economics offers a graduate scheme (and they offer to finance you through a masters).
If you google HM Treasury's list of independent forecasters, this is generally a good list of macro research firms that may have jobs to offer as a macroeconomist!
If you prefer micro to macro, companies like Oxera offer internship opportunities to undergrads - I dont really know much about microeconomic consultancies, but there seems to be a fair few around.
Otherwise, big recruiters are always a sure fire way to get some experience (and probably a decent slab of training/masters out of it) such as GES, BoE, FSA
A few of my friends have looked at more academic routes - check out institutes that may offer placements/internships that may help get your foot in the door! e.g. IEA
Good luck! Always happy to see an economics student that wants to be an economist, not a banker =) -
Re: Is it possible to get a graduate job as an economist?Indeed. I'd say that in many cases the former can be harder to get into as well!(Original post by wubwoo)
